Help Birds and their Habitat with Houston Audubon this Fall!
Help Birds and their Habitat with Houston Audubon this Fall!
August is here, and as the season is shifting, there is a lot to be excited about!

Our Bolivar Birds Beach Outreach is in full swing, and we need friendly, knowledgeable faces to connect with beachgoers and share the story of the incredible birds living and feeding along Bolivar Flats. It's a meaningful way to spend a morning on the coast.

We're also gearing up for the Bolivar Flats Beach Cleanup on September 26th, capping off Houston Bird Week in the best way possible: by leaving the beach better than we found it. Last year, close to 75 volunteers showed up and made a real difference. We'd love to see that number again this year, and we know you know people. Bring a friend, bring your family, bring your birding group, and make a difference for bird habitat this fall!

Finally, keep an eye on your inbox at the end of the month. We have an exciting announcement coming about our organization's new brand name, and we can't wait to share it with you!

Details on our upcoming volunteer opportunities are below. Let's finish summer strong, together.

Hope to see you at one of our Sanctuaries soon!

Protect Birds on the Bolivar Peninsula
Bolivar Birds Beach Outreach
Fridays and Saturdays through Sept 5 |
from 9 AM - 1 PM

This summer, Houston Audubon is raising awareness about the beach nesting birds on the Bolivar Peninsula.
To support this campaign, we will have Bolivar Birds Beach Outreach every Friday and Saturday through Labor Day weekend, from 9 AM–1 PM, and will kick things off next weekend!
Volunteers will work alongside HA staff member Casey Smith to head out onto the beach to have friendly conversations with beachgoers about how to share the shore with our beach-nesting birds.
These species, like the Wilson's Plover and Least Tern may have eggs and chicks nest right in the open sand and are incredibly vulnerable to accidental disturbance, so we want to educate others on how to share the shore while we are in their home. No birding experience is required, just a love for the beach and coastal wildlife! Houston Audubon will provides all the outreach materials, including some swag for doggies to make conversations more approachable.
There are 4 volunteer spots available each Friday and Saturday, and our goal is to have at least one volunteer out with us each day

Bolivar Flats Beach Cleanup
Saturday, Sept 26 | 9 AM - 12 PM

Help us clean up the shoreline at Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary during Bird Week! Your efforts will help prepare the sanctuary for the thousands of migrants coming through during fall migration and help provide clean habitat for our beach-nesting birds!
Houston Audubon will provide gloves, grabbers, trash bags, and water to refill your reusable containers.
Please dress accordingly for the weather and sun protection!

Education Program Volunteers at Edith L. Moore

Help Us Spark a Love of Nature, Starting with the Littlest Learners!
As school starts up again, Houston Audubon is seeking volunteers to support two of our early childhood education programs at Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary: Fledgling Friends, an engaging nature class for curious 3–5 year olds, and Stories & Crafts in the Cabin, a one-hour program of books, songs, movement, and hands-on making for that same age group.
We're looking for volunteers who can commit to attending each week of a program session — consistency matters a lot when you're working with young children. A background in early childhood education is a plus, but a genuine enthusiasm for nature and kids will take you far.
Adult volunteers will be required to complete a background check prior to their first session.
