Relive JHU Homewood Move-In

As your Jays first full week of classes have passed, let’s relive the excitement of JHU’s Homewood Move-In one last time!

We Want Your Feedback!

The Office of Orientation and First-Year Experience, in partnership with the Office of Parent & Family Relations, is committed to your students’ successful transition to the Hopkins Community. To this end, it is critical that we provide you, our newest Blue Jay Families, a strong orientation program as a launching point for our partnership in supporting your new Blue Jay.
We value your feedback regarding our Move-In and Parent & Family Orientation, and ask that you take this brief survey so we may continue to improve these programs.
The survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Please note that all of your responses will be kept completely confidential and all resulting data will only be reported in the aggregate. By clicking on the link you are indicating your willingness to participate in the survey.
Thank you in advance for your participation! If you have any specific questions about the survey, please contact our Office at firstyear@jhu.edu.

National Hazing Prevention Month

Johns Hopkins University is committed to hazing prevention and educating students, staff, and faculty about the effects participation of hazing can have on individuals and the community as a whole. At the Homewood campus, we are looking at hazing from many perspectives and have pulled a team of staff members together representing a cross-section of the campus. This group is officially called the Hazing Education and Assessment Team (HEAT) and will be the official sponsor of Hazing Prevention Week.

150+ Companies on Campus this September

September is the busiest month for recruiting at JHU, with more than 150 companies on campus. They take part in Consulting Week, STEM and Innovation Week, and two career fairs, among other events this month (find updates and details on our Facebook page). All students, from first years to PhDs, can benefit from attending employer-led events, meeting with a Career Coach, and spending some time on Handshake, our career portal. Here’s how you can help your student this fall.
Your Student is a First Year: Encourage them to attend Launch program events to explore their career options and get to know their Career Coach.
Your Student is an Upperclassman: Encourage them to update their Handshake profile, and make an appointment with a Career Coach. Join a Career Academy if they haven't already. They offer special networking opportunities and an industry-focused community.

Student Health Benefits Plan

All students of the Johns Hopkins University schools of Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and Peabody are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Benefits Plan (SHBP). International students are required to remain on the SHBP. Domestic students may waive the plan only if they have comparable coverage. They may do so by completing the waiver form by September 15, 2018.

New Drop-In Hours at the Counseling Center

As your Blue Jay settles back into their Hopkins routine, we want to let our Blue Jay Families know about a big change at the Counseling Center. We have changed the way students access our services - we are now offering Drop-In Hours every day. We hope that these new drop-in hours will make it easier for all Blue Jays to access a professional counselor when they need to.

Learn More About the JHU Transportation System

The start of the academic year is a great time to remind your student about the Blue Jay Shuttle, the university’s free system of vans and buses. A J-Card is all that is required to ride the shuttles, which operate nearly 24 hours a day, from 6:15 a.m. to 3:45 a.m. They allow your Blue Jay to easily and safely travel around the Homewood campus and its surrounding neighborhoods, or to other Hopkins campuses.

Parents! We Hope You'll Get Involved!

There are several opportunities for our Blue Jay Families to engage and volunteer throughout the year. For example, you may consider becoming a Blue Jay Family Ambassador. As an ambassador, you support JHU by volunteering your time to help with campus events and outreach activities in the surrounding area and in your home community. You may also serve as a contact person for other families who have questions about the Blue Jay Family experience. Ambassadors develop strong connections to JHU and relationships with fellow Blue Jay Families. Join one of our Ambassador committees today! Please visit our Blue Jay Family Ambassador page to learn more and sign up.
