| Hello friends and public media family,
Welcome back to The Green Room. To those who joined me last week, and to our new subscribers, you’ve found your VIP pass to the vibrant arts scene in our community. I’m Jimmy Rea, announcer and host of Arts News on KSMU Ozarks Public Radio. Alongside our sister station, Ozarks Public Television, we’re excited to bring you this weekly newsletter for a deeper look at local events, artists, and venues that keep the Ozarks arts community thriving.
This week, one Ozarkian musician prepares for a trip to Japan to perform. In my own touring abroad to Canada, Australia, England, and the Caribbean, I’ve learned that cultural differences and homesickness are real. But the joy music can bring bridges those gaps between people, proving that music truly is the universal language.
We’ll also hear from a relatively new theatre company that’s bringing the horror genre front and center. I didn’t know much about their work until an email landed in my inbox. What I expected to be a quick five-minute interview became a deep dive into their vision, creativity, and perspective.
If you know of a local artist or event that deserves the spotlight, especially emerging talent, I’d love to hear from you. Email me at JRea@missouristate.edu. Now, let’s step into The Green Room together and see what’s cooking around town.

Greetings, friends! Our Radar Spotlight this week is pointed directly at MAXIMUM WEEKEND - and, yes, all caps is how that is properly stylized. It was just announced last week that they will be local support for 90’s legends Blind Melon when they come to The Regency Live on Tuesday, Sept. 9th, so it seemed like a good time to light ‘em up. (And, even if the name doesn’t ring a bell, if you have turned on a radio in the last 30 years you absolutely know Blind Melon’s smash song “No Rain”.)
A powerhouse, alternative four-piece, they immediately punched a hole in the middle of the Springfield music scene when they debuted in 2021, drawing crowds and accolades from near and far. Now, four years later, they are on their third proper album and show no signs of stopping. Their sound draws from a range of influences to craft something ultimately unique and hard to define. Something….loud. You could correctly call it loud. Like, “push you out of the back of the room if the wall of sound they were generating wasn’t somehow drawing you ever closer like a moth to fatally raging fire” loud.
It's pretty great.
Don’t let that definition scare you. Let it welcome you. Warm you by that conflagration of melody and volume. You won’t regret it. Check out the lead single “I’ve Had Enough” from their self-titled third release (available on vinyl!) and we’ll see you next week!
