What is Medication-Assisted Treatment?
Recently new approaches to treat opiate addictions have been making headlines. You have probably heard Buprenorphine, Suboxone, or Methadone in the media, but what are they?
Medication-Assisted Treatment is the use of medications combined with counseling and behavioral therapies to provide a holistic approach to substance use disorders. Medication-Assisted Treatment is usually used for treatment of opiate addiction, like heroin or prescription pain medication. The prescribed medication operates to normalize brain chemistry, block the euphoric effects of alcohol and opioids, relieve physiological cravings, and normalize body functions without the negative effects of the abused drug.
