Bobby Hoye
Class of 2024

Hometown:
Fair Haven, NJ

His hobbies include environmental activism, running,
photography, playing the violin, and backpacking.

In April, when the New Jersey Marathon was postponed, Bobby decided to run it anyway. And, he did it for a cause! He ran 26.2 miles on his home treadmill, raising money for the Jersey Shore University Medical Center. More than $7,500 was raised for the hospital.
He was a four-year member of the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School winter track, and spring track and field teams. He is part of the dual-degree engineering program through Roanoke College and Virginia Tech to earn degrees in both physics and environmental engineering. He plans to compete for Roanoke’s cross country and track and field squads.

Q:  How would you describe your senior year of high school?

A:  It was single-handedly the most overwhelming and greatest year of my life!
When quarantine for COVID-19 started, I was on the top of the world and ready to make the most of the spring of my senior year. Instead, I was told to stay inside. I was depressed, but I decided to dedicate myself to the marathon fundraiser. That helped my well-being. It was a time of tremendous growth and opportunity for me.

Q:  What are a few of your interests?

A:   Running, photography and playing the violin. My passion is the environment. One day I hope to be in a profession that will make a positive impact on this planet. During the pandemic, I have spent a lot of time playing spikeball! There has been no real intellectual gain, but it has been something I could do with my older brother to spend time with him.

Q:  Why Roanoke?
A:  One reason I chose Roanoke is because of the five year dual-degree engineering program with Virginia Tech. I thought it was a difficult but intriguing way to experience college. Also, I am a member of the Honors program. I am really excited by the idea of a distinction project as well as being surrounded by the brightest students on campus.

Q:  What do you hope to accomplish during your time at Roanoke?
A:   I really want to build something here that will outlast me. I would love to make some sort of change concerning the sustainability of the campus, perhaps in the area of reducing or reusing plastic containers. I want to surround myself with the best friends, faculty, and staff, so I can make the most of my time at Roanoke.

Today I hope you will support students like Bobby who are writing the next chapter of their story here at Roanoke College. Please consider making a gift to the Roanoke Fund because your gift will make a profound impact in the lives of Roanoke students. Thank you!
