What a difference 16 years can make ...

By Ann Seacrest, RN, IBCLC, Executive Director of MilkWorks
It’s our birthday month! 16 years ago, seven brave women ventured out to create a breastfeeding center. At the time, fewer than 10% of moms breastfed for six months. While our goal was to provide support, there is no denying that a big part of what we set out to do was convince new moms that breastfeeding makes a difference. In 2004, the federal government branded a campaign called “Babies were born to be breastfed." The message for mothers was clear: Breastfeeding rates are too low and there are consequences to your babies health if you do not breastfeed.

Hello 2017! The word on the street is that moms no longer want to hear about statistics. They don’t want to feel pressured to breastfeed. They just want a bit of support. After all, what if you are the mom who never makes a full milk supply? What if your baby never latches well and getting a full feeding at the breast is like climbing Mount Everest? The reality is that breastfeeding is often far from perfect. Shouldn’t our message be “bestfed” instead of “breastfed?"

Support for Student Parents

Thank you to Senator Tony Vargas for addressing the needs of student parents in our school systems. LB 427 and LB 428 would require schools to make breastfeeding accommodations and adopt policies which support teen parents to stay in school and graduate.
An additional thank you to Community Breastfeeding Educator, Dania DeLone, who testified on behalf of teen parents and shared the special challenges that student parents face as they take care of their children and finish high school.

Medihoney at MilkWorks

Breastfeeding is not meant to hurt. If it does, we encourage moms to work with an IBCLC. When a mom gets sore or cracked nipples, we like to help her fix the problem and heal her nipples quickly. Medihoney is a product that relies upon age old wisdom to create a healing environment without the use of antibiotics.

Healing Gifts

Loss is often a part of motherhood - infertility, miscarriage, still birth even the “loss” of a planned picture perfect birth or breastfeeding experience can be difficult.
Earth Mama Angel Baby created the Healing Hearts line of products to help comfort the physical and emotional needs of mothers facing a loss. Their Light of My Heart Candle, Healing Hearts Mist, and Seeds of Hope are available at both MilkWorks locations. They are a lovely gift when you don't know what to say, but want to show your support.

What I Love to Gift from MilkWorks

“I love gifting (and getting!) Owl People onesies. They are each hand made by a Nebraska native. It's great that one purchase supports two local businesses! The Nebraska designs are the perfect gender neutral gift. They are sewn with great care, they hold up well in the wash, and they come in lots of different sizes.” - Angie

MilkWorks has great gifts for moms and babies. When you shop, you support a great cause: breastfeeding!

16 Years and 5 MilkBabies

In honor of our 16th birthday, meet Jody and her MilkBabies. Jody first came to MilkWorks 16 years ago with her first baby. As a loyal MilkMom, all five of her kids, including her premature twins, Natalie and Jordan, hung out at MilkWorks.

AAP Guidelines on Infant Sleep

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently updated their infant sleep policy. While the statement reinforces many of their earlier recommendations, it has adjusted others, particularly those that impact breastfeeding mothers. La Leche League applauds the AAP for their revisions. Read more.
