Psalm 91:7-8
A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.
New International Version (NIV)
Why have we been spared?  I was reminded of the seven year old girl, Sailor Gutzler, who survived a plane crash, and walked a mile in the dark through rugged terrain in Kentucky.  She saw a porchlight through the trees and knocked on the door.  Sailor was the only survivor of the crash.

After taking inventory of the scary things which might harm us, the Psalmist tells us that if God is our refuge, we will be spared.  As Christians we trust in God's ultimate protection.  Believers are subject to so much pain and struggle in this life.  Some survive and wonder, "Why has God spared me?"  If we are still here, we know God has a purpose for us.

What about those who love the Lord and endure enormous suffering?  How are we to interpret and apply this passage and Psalm 121, "He will keep you from all harm"?  God's protection does not always prevent us from being in accidents or contracting illnesses in this life.  Although we have no immunity to the problems of this life, believers live with confidence that the struggles of this life are not the last chapter of our stories.  In the end, the wicked are punished, and those who are made righteous by faith will live forever with Christ.  This is our hope!

Pray with me:
Father, you have given us the gift of faith so that we may put our full trust in you.  Thank you for sustaining us through the storms of life.  Show us why we are here.  Help us to fulfill our purpose in this life and to follow you all the way through the finish line.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
