| | Dear RV Friend, With Labor Day past, autumn is (unofficially) here, and we turn our attention to all the wonderful sights and smells of the season. But just because the nights are cooler and the kids are back in school doesn’t mean the travel fun has to end. In fact, here at FMCA, we think fall camping is the best! If you like fewer crowds, fewer bugs, and cheaper rates, that is.

We had a small issue with service from FMCA Roadside Rescue®, and they made it right. They called me twice to apologize and to get the complete story. It shows me they take customer service seriously. I plan on staying with them for customer service like this.

| Fire Safety 101
Ahh...fall is the perfect time to get cozy around a campfire. But are you practicing campfire safety? Here are a few reminders.
| |
How To Extinguish A Campfire
When you’re ready to put out your fire and call it a night, follow these guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture:
1. Allow the wood to burn completely to ash, if possible.
2. Pour lots of water on the fire; drown ALL embers, not just the red ones.
3. Pour until hissing sound stops.
4. Stir the campfire ashes and embers with a shovel.
5. Scrape the sticks and logs to remove any embers.
6. Stir and make sure everything is wet and cold to the touch.
7. If you do not have water, use dirt. Mix enough dirt or sand with the embers. Continue adding and stirring until all material is cool. Remember: do NOT bury the fire as the fire will continue to smolder and could catch roots on fire.

Fire Restrictions
If you have traveled in wildfire-prone areas, you may have stayed at a campground that bans campfires or had your route affected by road closures. Consult these resources:

Beer, Brats & Barrels Of Fun
Planning An Oktoberfest Party
Even if you can’t make it to Munich for the world’s largest Oktoberfest celebration this month, you can still enjoy the delights of this favorite fall celebration. Don your lederhosen or dirndl, and gather your chapter friends or your campground neighbors for some Bavarian-inspired merrymaking. Food
Of course, food is a highlight of any Oktoberfest celebration. Develop a menu that includes some favorite German dishes. Break out the grill and throw on some wursts – bratwursts, mettwursts, all the wursts! Bavarian soft pretzels are another fun food to serve, or substitute hard pretzels in a pinch. Add beer cheese for dipping and prepare German potato salad. Beer
Beer is another Oktoberfest staple. Tap a keg, pop open some German lager, or ask your guests to bring along their favorite craft beers to have a sampling party. (First, make sure alcohol is permitted within the campground rules.) And for those who don’t wish to imbibe or for the younger set, provide steins of root beer.
| |
Music
Music is a must. Put together a playlist of Bavarian oom-pah music to set the mood. Don’t forget the ever popular “Ein Prosit” toasting song and the “Beer Barrel Polka.” Or simply turn on FMCA's Oktoberfest playlist!
Decorations
Consider that the most popular color scheme is blue and white — the colors of the Bavarian flag. Use a pop-up tent to create your own version of a biergarten and decorate it with German flair. Create a backdrop or provide whimsical props for a photo booth. See decoration ideas on FMCA's Pinterest. And by all means, share your photos with us (#fmcaRV) on social media. As they say in Munich: Prost! Cheers!
