Hi Neighbor!

“Mommy(or Daddy/Grandma/Grandpa!), I can't doooooo it! Can't you just do it for me?” How many times do we hear that from our kids? "Did you try?" I would ask, and watch as their earnest, adorable, lying little faces would tell me they did. Uh huh, sure... I won't call it laziness per se; but, let's just say that I got tired of their selective participation every time they wanted me to do something simply because they didn't feel like doing it themselves. So I came up with a simple question: "If someone was willing to give you a million dollars for the task, could you do it?"  Let's face it, money talks. (Oh, the toys they could buy with $1,000,000!) The beautiful thing about “The Million Dollar Question" was its immediate effectiveness. Thought provoking, obvious, revealing—and SO ANNOYING to my children. Because it forced them to examine whether they really did try their best and usually exposed that they hadn’t. All without me having to say another word.

Even now, as my millennials are blazing their own trails though life, we’ll sometimes have discussions about attaining certain challenging goals and I'll throw out the Million Dollar Question. "UGH! I HATE that question!!" my 28 year old will exclaim! Haha—still effective! To which I then further annoy them (and turn into my mother) and sing that lyric from Don Henley's song: "How bad do you want it? Not bad enough…”

Keep on Trying!

Welcome Saved Me Rescue to Narberth!
Saved Me, Inc.  a non- profit, no-kill, all breed rescue has been saving lives of thousands of pets in the Philadelphia area for two years.  They have been finding homes for dogs and cats who are most at risk of euthanasia in overcrowded, high kill shelters locally and in other states. Through their “You Saved Me and Me” program they have helped increase awareness of the plight of pit bulls which are currently the most popular breed and thus over represented in Philadelphia’s Animal Care and Control shelter.  And they’ve promised adopters that each time a pit-bull is adopted another local pit bull will be saved at Animal Control.  Adopters are assured that they are saving two lives through this program – the dog they adopt and the one who gets to take his place.
Saved Me operates a shelter at 858 North 3rd Street in Philadelphia, a brand new adoption center at Doggie Style Pets, 701 Montgomery Avenue in Narberth (the former home of Buzzy’s Bow Wow Meow) and seven adoption centers in Philadelphia area Doggie Style Pets shops.  You can find dogs of all breeds, mixes, ages and sizes.  The Philadelphia and Narberth locations also have adoptable cats.  Adoption hours are M-F 10 till 8, Sat 10 till 7 and Sunday 10 till 6. The shelters are a cheerful, welcoming and convenient place to visit and spend as much time as you would like getting to know some of the pets who are waiting for a family.   Please email info@savedme.org or call 215-240-1240 for more information and to view adoptable pets on-line go to savedme.org/adopt
Private non-profits like Saved Me rely heavily on volunteers to help with many of the jobs needed to run their main shelter and eight adoption centers.  Volunteers can go online at savedme.org/volunteer to sign up and then attend an orientation to learn more about the shelter’s needs.  If you can’t attend an orientation but still want to help you can stop by your local doggie style to sign-up and take dogs for walks or spend time with the cats.  Children up to 15 years can volunteer with a parent or guardian and at 16 and 17 years old you can volunteer on your own with parental or guardian consent.  They can use help promoting their adoption program and showcasing adoptable pets on websites and social media.  You can also help with transporting from shelters and raising money to help sick or injured pets who can be rehabilitated.
Another way to help is to gather items such as gently used towels or something from the rescue’s wish list which can be viewed at savedme.org/donate.   Ask your neighbors and friends if they have items to donate.  Saved Me may be able to visit a group or a local event with adoptable animals.  Let us know what’s going on in your area.
