Teaching Tips
This section is full of timely and evidence-based practices to apply in your teaching. Today's tips highlight teaching practices from a recent episode of the Dead Ideas in Teaching Podcast called "What Inclusive Instructors Do."
It's in the Syllabus. As instructors, we often point students to the syllabus as a point of reference for assignment clarification, assessment expectations, and timelines. The syllabus, however, is a foundational resource where we can set the tone for our course with inclusive language and policies and demonstrate to our students that they belong in this course. The UTLC syllabus template includes sample statements consistent with inclusive teaching practices, and the podcast episode goes into great detail on how to update your syllabus with equity in mind.
Know where you can Grow. Creating an inclusive and equitable learning environment with and for our students begins with evaluating our own biases and blind spots. By diversifying the perspectives in texts and other forms of media brought into the (physical or virtual) classroom, we can challenge our own viewpoints and encourage critical discussion to learn from one another. A great online tool to get started is the Harvard Implicit Association Test.
Dive Deeper. "What Inclusive Instructors Do: Principles and Practices for Excellence in College Teaching" (2021) is now available as an eBook through the UNCG Library. This publication is an excellent recource for instructors at any stage of their inclusive teaching journey as it offers frameworks and specific course examples of what inclusive teaching actually looks like in the classroom.
