Teaching Tips: The Spring Break Reset |
|
|
Spring break offers students (and faculty) a much-needed pause, but returning to the classroom can sometimes feel like a reset in the wrong direction. Motivation may shift, routines are disrupted, and students can struggle to re-engage academically. Rather than viewing this as lost momentum, instructors can treat the return from break as a “Springboard Moment”: an opportunity for reflection, recalibration, and renewed focus for the remainder of the semester.
|
- Start with reflection: Invite students to reflect on their learning so far and set one goal for the remainder of the semester. Even a short prompt can help students reset and refocus.
-
Revisit expectations: Briefly review upcoming assignments and milestones to help students regain their structure. Clear direction can help rebuild academic routines (see: How to Motivate Students After Spring Break).
-
Set short-term goals: Break the remaining weeks into smaller milestones to maintain momentum. Achievable goals help students stay motivated and focused.
-
Encourage interaction: Use quick discussions or collaborative activities to re-energize participation. Connection and engagement can help counter post-break disengagement.

|
Small adjustments after spring break can help instructors turn the transition back into class into renewed momentum for the rest of the semester.

Join the UTLC and the Office of Intercultural Engagement for a conversation about student experiences in the classroom and beyond. This time the student panel is focused on AI use and will take place on March 26 at 1 pm. VOISES panels provide a venue for faculty to hear the perspective of students about their experiences on campus. These moderated panels give faculty the chance to ask questions while reflecting on ways they can support student success and learning.

Tech Tips: Alternative Assignment Formats for Engagement |
|
|
Looking for ways to engage students? Design an assignment that give students choice can increase ownership and participation. Adobe Express presentations allow students to creatively “teach the class” while submitting work in a familiar workflow in Canvas. Here’s a quick step‑by‑step guide to get started. You can also use this Instructure Guide for setting up your assignment in Canvas and share this Adobe Express Guide with your students for how to make presentations.
How to create a Canvas assignment for Adobe Express presentations:
|
-
In Canvas, select Assignments then + Assignment and add your instructions and rubric.
- Set Submission Type to Online.
- Choose Website URL (for shared presentation links) and/or File Uploads (for downloaded PDFs).
- Ask students to create a Presentation in Adobe Express explaining an assigned concept or skill.
- Students select Share then Link in Adobe Express and submit the URL (or upload a PDF export) in Canvas.

Anthology Course Evaluation Pilot |
|
|
The Anthology Course Evaluation pilot is ongoing! We are piloting Anthology Evaluate as a possible alternative to class climate. After successful Spring and Fall 2025 semesters, we are hoping to recruit more participants to "load-test" the system and collect data on two different possible question sets. Evaluate offers two sets of research-backed common question choices, the possibility of adding custom questions, the ability to access your reports online, and teaching evaluations that can be completed in class (for face to face classes), with the potential of raising response rates.
If you're interested in participating, please opt-in by March 23. If you have questions, please email Joyce Clapp at jfclapp@uncg.edu.
