Xploration Station: Nature Knows Best features UA Polymer Researchers

Drs. Ali Dhinojwala and Abraham Joy, Professors at the Department of Polymer Science, are well known for their research in biomimicry, the science of applying natural characteristics to new technology. Recently their work caught the attention of Xploration Station: Nature Knows Best, a syndicated television show dedicated to exploring all things science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The show’s host, Danni Washington, and a camera crew traveled to The University of Akron to interview them about their research.

Dr. Dhinojwala and Dr. Joy, along with UA students Ying Xu, Qianhui Liu, Amal Narayanan, and Dharamdeep Jain, have studied enough polymers and adhesives to know that nature does, indeed, know best. They noted that mussels were able to anchor themselves to rocks, withstanding the turbulent ocean tide. The strength of that underwater adhesive would have incredibly useful applications, from repairing water pipes to closing surgical wounds. By studying the qualities in mussels... Read More

A Partnership in the Making: Polymer College Welcomes Delegation from Malaysia

October 2nd was not just another Monday at The University of Akron. UA hosted a delegation of six representatives from Malaysia, all of whom are part of the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA). The NCIA is an organization dedicated to facilitating socio-economic growth in Malaysia, and now they are tasked with building what will be called “The Rubber City” on a 1,254-acre plot of land near the border of Malaysia and Thailand.

While the project was in its planning stages in 2016, the NCIA had sent another group to Akron to consult with local businesses and professionals at the university. Now, the project has progressed to the point where they hope to begin construction as soon as 2018, and bring in businesses and programs in 2019. This year’s visit will allow UA and NCIA to explore the possibility of partnership both on this project and in the future. Read More

Thanking the Nelson Family Scholarship for Promoting Polymer Education

Scholarships are vital to many students’ success throughout their college careers, and often even beyond graduation. Financial aid programs such as the Nelson Family Scholarship in Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering can open a lot of doors for our students, while encouraging them to study polymers. On Friday UA hosted a luncheon for the Nelson Scholars to meet alumni Harvey S. Nelson, the co-CEO of Main Street Gourmet and the founder of the Nelson Family Scholarship. Read More

Bird Feathers Inspire Production of Dyes that Don’t Fade

In the vibrant world in which we live, colors are significant for not only aesthetics and pleasure, but also for communication, signaling and security. Colors are produced through either absorption of light by molecules —pigmentary colors — or scattering of light by nanostructures — structural colors.

Structural colors enable the creation of a spectrum of non-fading colors without pigments, potentially replacing toxic metal oxides and organic pigments. However, there are challenges. Many traditional structural colors are iridescent and thus not useful for wide-angle displays. Recent examples of non-iridescent structural colors have been found to lack sufficient color saturation in the absence of absorbing materials to reduce incoherent scattering. Read More
