Amid their second year at Silver, Issac is committed to doing outstanding work and making substantial changes during their time at NYU. Issac is a sophomore majoring in social work at Silver and minoring in American Sign Language. Interested in forensic social work and criminal justice, NYU Silver was Issac's first choice school. Being a first-generation college student, Issac spoke about their college application journey through a program that assisted first-generation college students being extremely helpful and led them to apply to great social work programs like Silver.
With their status as a first-generation college student, Issac is currently in the First-Gen Students of Color organization at NYU Silver, and the undergraduate representative on the e-board that includes students from all levels of study. The purpose of the organization is to curate a space for students who share these identities to network and be in community with one another. Issac emphasized the importance of community in this organization by speaking about allowing students to learn about others' experiences in the field, share their academic and personal experiences, and advocate for change. They are also planning to have First-Gen Students of Color work with a wonderful organization called Sanctuaries for Families. SFF is an organization committed to providing resources and shelters for families in addition to starting a student leadership program. SFF and First-Gen are hosting a panel for low-income first-generation students to introduce them to different majors and what the college application process is like at the end of the month.
Issac describes Silver as a very amazing school thus far in their college career. They appreciate the staff and students within Silver and the size allowing for closer connections to be made. With their remaining time here and future in social work, Issac hopes to continue to build up First-Gen Students of Color and build it into an organization that will continue to meet after they graduate, obtain their MSW, and land a career in something interesting and sustainable. They also hope to one day return to NYU Silver and obtain their doctorate in social work.
If you are a first-generation student of color, please do not hesitate to be a part of the community that Issac is helping to build. We thank you Issac for all you do and hope you continue to flourish!
