“You get a mulligan,” said my friend Al. With the exception of putt putt, I never played golf until I was 23 or so. Al was a great golfer. Also, Al was a great fisherman. Everything Al did was good. But when I hit my first tee shot into the pasture left of the fairway at Battle Lake Golf Course, he said, “You get a mulligan.” A mulligan, you likely know, is a do-over. I came to love mulligans and foot wedges when I played regularly. I needed mulligans more than most golfers do.
After the great flood, God gave the world and humankind a mulligan. Once the flood waters receded, God told Noah and family they could leave the boat. They brought all the animals out as well so that they could multiply, become fruitful, and increase in number on the earth. God gave the world another chance.
In Christ, we, too have received a second chance. What will we do with our second chance? Today is a new day. We cannot change the mistakes of yesterday. No sense wallowing in them. Confess, turn, and start over. Today is a great day to obey the Lord. Did you wake up this morning? God must have a plan. Ask him to direct your steps today. As a contemporary song says, “If it is not good, he is not finished.” I wonder what God will do in and through us today. Watch and see.
