So many people we know lost so much in Hurricane Harvey. We remember when the rain started, and we remember when it stopped. But the real trouble started when the water upstream was released. My memory is of walking from Memorial Drive about a half a mile back to our house, wading through the water. Friends’ homes flooded on both sides of our neighborhood. Our house was on a little crest. We didn’t even know that before the flood. Slowly the water began to recede.
In Noah’s day, the waters flooded the earth for a long time. It would have been so easy for Noah and his family to feel forgotten. But God remembered them. The water began to recede. The ark rested on the mountains of Ararat. Nine months after the rain started, they could see the tops of the mountains.
I remember Randall O’Brien’s sermon about “walking through the waters of woe.” Whenever water threatened to undo the people of God, he made a way through the waters of woe. All of our fear is caused by calculating without God. A missionary named Gladys Aylward wanted to give up as she tried to lead children out of a dangerous situation. A little girl reminded her that God had parted the waters for Moses. Gladys broke into tears as she told the girl, “But I am not Moses.” With amazing faith, the little girl said, “I know you are not Moses. But God is still God.” God remembers us. We must remember him.
