1 Timothy 4:13-16
Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching.  Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.  Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress.  Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Do we still believe in preaching?  What good is preaching anyway?  This week I have heard a number of great sermons.  This week Tony Evans, Beth Moore, D. L. Lowrie and Alistair Begg descended on Waco, Texas and proclaimed the good news at a National Preaching Conference.

Paul believed in preaching greatly and encouraged Timothy his protégé to grow as a proclaimer.  He told him to devote himself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching.  Preaching is a gift from God to which preachers must give themselves.  The goal is to grow in preaching.  Some of the very best preachers I know have been doing it well for a very long time.

When our beliefs shape our lives, and we put our preaching into practice, not only do we live out our salvation but we authenticate it for our hearers.  This Sunday, somewhere near you, someone will preach.  We proclaim Christ as our only hope of salvation.  We preach so that we may present our hearers fully mature in Christ (Colossians 1:28).  Our faith comes from hearing the message in the word about Christ.  I am so glad that I get to preach this weekend.  Even more, I am glad if one person listens.  Worship somewhere this weekend where God’s word is proclaimed.  It will change your life.

Pray with me:
Father, we need a word from you.  We need to hear from you.  If we don’t hear from you, what will we do?  We need you more each day.  Show us your perfect way.  There is no other way for us to live.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
