NLM Traveling Exhibit Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Rubella Vaccine
The Medical Library is pleased that it will host the National Library of Medicine's newest traveling exhibit Rashes to Research: Scientists and Parents Confront the 1964 Rubella Epidemic from July 29 - September 6 in the Kresge Library Lobby. The exhibit celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first commercially viable rubella (German measles) vaccine released in June 1969.
During the rubella epidemic of 1964 & 1965, over 20,000 children were born with serious heart, hearing, and vision problems related to rubella exposure during pregnancy. Tens of thousands of families suffered miscarriages or stillbirths due to the rubella virus and others were forced to make difficult decisions about their pregnancies [1]. The exhibit chronicles the strategies used by experts and families to limit exposure and complications of rubella prior to the vaccine developed by two NIH researchers, Harry M. Meyer, Jr. and Paul Parkman. For more information visit the exhibit website and digital gallery.
In addition, the Medical Library has been invited by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to participate as a pilot institution in their new Exhibitions Connect program, which focuses on raising awareness of free NLM online health information resources through the hosting of these traveling exhibits. In addition to the exhibit, stop by the Medical Library beginning July 29 to view our book cart of related books, articles, and NLM brochures celebrating the anniversary.

Staff News
Welcome to our New Staff Member - Marjorie Suchyta! Join us in welcoming the newest member of the Medical Library team, Margie! Margie joined us on Monday, June 24, as our Medical Library Technology Specialist. She comes to us from the OU College of Engineering & Computer Science and will be working to enhance the Medical Library's website, maintain the technology in our physical spaces, and spearhead new technology initiatives! If you get the chance, stop by the Medical Library Office to welcome Margie to OUWB!
Thank you, Emily Yuen! Emily Yuen, rising M2 student, completed an OUWB Summer Internship with the Medical Library during the month of June to develop a set of ready-made health education toolkits as part of our recent National Network of Libraries of Medicine All of Us Public Library Partnership Award grant. Emily created four new lesson plans: two for kids focused on the skeletal system and the heart and two for seniors on home safety and Alzheimer's disease. These sessions will be integrated into Auburn Hills Public Library's children and adult programming in the 2019 - 2020 academic year. In addition, these and other previously created toolkits will be made available to the OUWB community for other health outreach events through a shared online repository.

Resource News: PDFs of ClinicalKey Book Chapters
ClinicalKey, one of our major eBook and textbook databases, has recently changed PDF access to many major medical titles. Even with a personal account, users no longer have the ability to download PDFs or print to PDF chapters from major textbooks including Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, Gray's Anatomy, Gastrointestinal Physiology, among others. You may encounter a grayed out PDF icon next to the chapter title as shown in the screenshot below or an error message when trying to print to PDF.

For course Moodle pages, we encourage you to link to these eBooks by creating a proxy link to the book (allowing remote access from off-campus) rather than posting PDFs to allow continued access.
We apologize for this inconvenience. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at medref@oakland.edu.
