Volunteer Clean Up Day a Success

Approximately 30 volunteers recently participated in an Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission (ANHC) Volunteer Clean Up Day at Dardanelle Rock Natural Area. Mild weather aided volunteers as they cleaned up trash from the roadside of the natural area, removing about 15 full bags of trash.

New Commissioner Named by Speaker

Ben Noble of Little Rock was recently appointed by former Speaker of the House Davy Carter to fill a vacant position on the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission (ANHC). Noble replaces the position vacated by Sharon Walker.

Study of Hibernation May Help Alzheimer's Patients

New clues and help for Alzheimer’s patients may be found by studying nature, specifically hibernation. Recently, scientists have discovered a protein which protects hibernating animals during lengthy spells of sleeping that they believe could be the key to fighting Alzheimer’s disease.

Hutchinson Names Hurst as New Director of the Department of Arkansas Heritage

Governor Asa Hutchinson has named Stacy Hurst of Little Rock as the new director of the Department of Arkansas Heritage (DAH). Hurst replaces Martha Miller, who resigned earlier this month. 

The Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission is one of seven agencies that make up the DAH, including the Arkansas Arts Council, Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, Delta Cultural Center in Helena, Historic Arkansas Museum, Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, and the Old State House Museum.

Improvements Underway at Lorance Creek Natural Area

Lorance Creek Natural Area, the closest natural area to the major population centers of central Arkansas, receives numerous visitors each year to its 1,200 foot trail and boardwalk. Work is currently underway to resurface the 15 year-old trail and to replace, redesign, and update Lorance Creek’s interpretive panels.
