1 Timothy 6:6-7
But godliness with contentment is great gain.  For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.
New International Version (NIV)
Do you remember when the volcano of Mount St. Helens blew up?  A recent documentary told of a man who refused to heed the warnings, staying in his house until the explosion.  A commentator said, “To this day he is the only person who actually took everything with him when he died.”  Sobering thought!
How much would we have to have to be happy?  Good question!  Paul saw all of life through the lens of the gospel.  If we have God and contentment we have great gain.  My friend Calvin Miller used to say, “I have to have God, and I would really like to have my wife.  After that, everything in life is negotiable.”
If we live long enough we will lose some things.  It could be in the stock market, or it could be in the arena of relationships.  When we do, we will be tempted to become bitter.  Why can’t I have everything I want all of the time?  Paul’s reminder helps us.  We didn’t have anything when we arrived in this world.  We really won’t take anything with us.  “Only one life.  It will soon be past.  Only what is done for Christ will last!”  This is great gain!
Pray with me:
Father, show us what we had when we were born.  Show us all that we have in you.  Make us godly.  Give us a deep contentment in our souls reminding us that you are now and always will be enough for us.  We pray In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
I want to invite you to join me in memorizing 52 passages this year from the 2017 set of Fighter Verses.  You can find the Fighter Verses App at the App Store on your phones or via this link  http://fighterverses.com/the-verses/fighter-verses/As we study the Bible this year, let's look at each text and learn what it says about God.
