Acts 5:7-11
7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”
“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.” 9 Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.” 10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.

New International Version (NIV)
Vance Havner once preached about this story and said, “If the Lord treated churches today like he did the first church, every church would need a morgue in its basement.”  Ouch!

Sapphira had a chance to come clean and live. The Apostle Peter asked her about the selling price of the land she and Ananias sold. Not knowing her husband had died, she perpetuated the lie he had told. Consequently, she also died. What was the cause of death? Truthfully, they lied themselves to death.

Does God still care about the truth? Yes, he does. We can trust God to tell us the truth. Can he trust us? Paul would later write to the believers in Ephesus, “Therefore, each of you must off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body” (Ephesians 4:25).

Why does God care if we tell a white lie? Why does it matter if we tell the truth? We are all part of one body. We show love when we tell each other the truth (Ephesians 4:15). Ultimately, truth is the currency of the church. If we devalue it with our words, we may devalue the gospel itself in the eyes of others. So when is the best time to stop lying? Now.
Pray with me:
Father, we remember that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Thank you for sending Jesus to show us the truth about who you are and who we are. Help us to speak the truth to each other, in love. May Jesus become the Way we walk, the Truth we tell and the Life we live, today, we pray. Amen
We begin the new year of 2024 with great anticipation.  Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
