Is God still working miracles in our day? Jesus promised his followers, “You will do greater things” ( John 14:12 ). Luke tells us that the early Christians continued Jesus' work and word in the world. We learn here that the apostles did signs and wonders. Earlier, Luke tells us that “Everyone was in awe . . .” (Acts 2:43). What happened to the wonders? Do we ever wonder?
Some commentators believe that God only did miracles at certain times in history. For example, Moses’ signs to Pharaoh, Elijah and Elisha’s signs, as well as the miracles of Jesus and the early church represent the three seasons of miraculous power. These “cessationist” scholars contend that the miracles have ceased in our day.
What can we learn from these early believers? The Christians in Jerusalem continued to meet in Solomon’s Colonnade in the temple. Even though they still enjoyed the goodwill of the people, the signs and wonders made some of the others in Jerusalem wary of the Christians. But those who believed in the Lord joined the disciples. This led to more signs and wonders as the apostles continued Jesus’ work.
We certainly do not claim to have supernatural power to perform miracles today. But God! But God presides with the same power he has always had. We are not magicians who wave wands or conjure God’s power. But if you ask me if God can still do miracles, my answer is an unequivocal, “Yes.” Tozer wrote, “Anything God has ever done, he can do now. Anything God has ever done anywhere, he can do here. Anything God has ever done for anyone he can do for us.” Do you believe that? I do. So we pray that he will stretch out his hand and prove his power in our day, too. As the angel Gabriel told Mary, “Nothing will be called impossible with God.” We should definitely continue to live life “with God.”
