Tech Tip of the Week

From Jen O'Brien
TIP: Find good, free pictures that don’t require permission or attribution for flyer / digital content creation.
WHY: Spruce up your content creation with better images AND feel good about doing it in a legitimate, legal way. AND do it for free!
Google and other search engines have been made it super easy to find just about any image you could possibly want. However, many of the images that pop up in a search may require attribution or permission and it’s not necessarily easily apparent which ones are free and open for anyone’s use.
HOW?  While this list is not an exhaustive solution, it should get you started:
  • Miami’s Photoshelter Archives: Professional photographs copyrighted to Miami for the university community to post, share, and publicize. Bonus: It’s searchable!
  • Creative Commons Photo Sites: There are dozens, probably hundreds, of websites dedicated to providing free images to use for any purposes without attribution or permission. I happen to have bookmarked 15 or 20 of the best sites I’ve found - send a quick e-mail to obrienjc@miamioh.edu to request the list!
  • Google Images Advanced Search:  Our friend Google has made it possible to filter Google Image results by Usage Rights. Just click on “Search Tools” and then filter your results to “Labeled for noncommercial reuse with modification” or “Labeled for noncommercial reuse”.  It’s not full-proof, but this should get you closer! You can also enter the image URL to www.tineye.com to find the original photo and get a better idea of its usage rights.
