Kicking off the 2026-2027 Academic Year |

Last week marked the official start of the 2026–2027 academic year! Prior to classes beginning, we had the opportunity to connect across the School of Medicine Graduate Programs at orientation. Once the week was underway, our TL1 scholars discovered invaluable ICTS resources while new and returning scholars alike got to know one another over delicious Modern Brewery pizza. CRTC Director Nancy Sweitzer, MD, PhD, also kicked off our Career Development Seminar Series with an engaging discussion on structuring research projects for success. With so much energy and connection across our community already, we’re thrilled for the year ahead!

- 17 credit hour training program
- 2-3 years to complete
- May enroll in additional coursework to complete the Graduate Certificate or Master of Science in Clinical Investigation degree

- Must possess a doctoral-level degree
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residency required

- 1-5 years to complete
- 4 concentrations to choose from: Clinical Investigation, Translational Medicine, Genomics/Genetics, and Dissemination and Implementation

The Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences (ICTS) Research Development Program will host their Winter NIH Mock Study Section (MSS) on Wednesday, November 18, 2026, from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. via Zoom. The MSS simulates an actual NIH study section to give investigators preparing an NIH grant application a competitive edge. Participants will receive a review, critique, and score of their application from faculty and study section members.
Submit your Letter of Intent (LOI) by 5 p.m. on September 23, 2026.

The McDonnell Genome Institute is launching a new Long-Read Sequencing Pilot Program at their Long-Read Sequencing Symposium on September 8, 2026 from 11:30 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. in the Neuroscience Research Building.
Learn about leading long-read platforms, discover real-world applications from WashU Medicine researchers, and explore a new pilot opportunity with three awards each valued at approximately $10,000. Researchers must attend in person to be eligible to submit a proposal.

Do you struggle to clearly communicate your research to broader audiences, reviewers, or collaborators? Join us for a university-wide training with Randy Olson, PhD on the ABT (And, But, Therefore) Framework — a simple, powerful tool used by scientists, communicators, and policymakers worldwide to make complex ideas clear and compelling.
The keynote lunch introduces the framework; hands-on workshops then put it to work, with participants building and refining their own ABT alongside Randy and his team. These sessions will be held Sep. 22 & 23, 2026. Register now!

The WashU Medicine Department of Psychiatry is excited to bring together leading researchers, clinicians, and innovators in AI and digital mental health for a day of dialogue, discovery, and connection at the AI & Digital Mental Health Symposium. The symposium will feature a keynote address by Dr. Shannon Wiltsey Stirman of Stanford University, focused on responsible and effective AI technology for PTSD treatment, along with panel discussions exploring the use of AI and digital mental health tools in precision psychiatry and highlighting innovative work underway across WashU Medicine. Join us Sep. 29, 2026 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Farrell Learning and Teaching Center.
