Election Reminder:
This election is one that is garnering significant attention and unusually high levels of participation. That is what a healthy democracy does; we participate and care deeply about what is best for each member of our community. Regardless of how it goes, we need to make sure to use respectful language, process verbally with our families, and always focus on non-violence. We must be kind to one another and thoughtful about the example we are setting for the next generation, those young and watching. As we traverse the coming week of votes and decisions; words matter and perhaps our actions matter even more.

Parent Education Resources of the week - Topic: Mental Health:
From our Mental Health Specialist Caleb Visser
I have a young nephew, he’s 3, who plays hard. He sprints around on hardwood floors, throws himself off couches, and often falls and runs into things. He’s doing something new these days, shouting “I’m OK! I’m OK!” right after he hurts himself. He’ll squirm away from any attempt to help or console. He’s trying to be independent, which is great. He also has me thinking of how hard it is to ask for help or receive it. Most of us would much rather say “I’m OK! I’m OK!”, even as we’re on the floor in pain.
Of course, we’re mostly not OK much of the time. We need help. Famous psychologist Brene Brown has a brilliantly titled book “I Thought it was Just Me (but it isn’t)”. The problem with “I’m OK!”, is it keeps us from connecting with people around us who are also feeling afraid or desperate. It’s not just you. We all need help.
The school asked me to offer some mental health resources to families. So keep reading if you need some help, and please know you’re not alone.
If you need help maintaining structure and balance in your life, or in your teenager’s life, look at Daniel Siegel’s “Healthy Mind Platter”. Siegel offers a daily brain “diet”, encouraging activities in 7 areas. This is a practical way to move toward increased emotional well-being. https://www.drdansiegel.com/resources/healthy_mind_platter/
If you need help slowing down or feel like you spend your days in “fight or flight”, please look at the increasingly popular app Headspace. Personally, I’ve had a full subscription for several years. Headspace could not make meditation any simpler. There are cute animations that introduce certain concepts. Start with the introduction class and set the timer for 2 minutes. Just start! https://www.headspace.com/.
If you need help working through panic, or negative thought patterns, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an evidence-based treatment that continues to be popular. If you go to your doctor with mental health concerns, they are likely to refer you to a CBT-practicing therapist. There are several apps which make CBT easily accessible. Read about some here.
If you’re a parent who needs help, and want to connect with a therapist, just call your insurance and ask to be referred. Look for someone with experience! It’s my own belief that experience is everything in mental health. If you don’t have insurance and are worried about cost, check out OPEN PATH collective, which works to make therapy affordable to everyone. https://openpathcollective.org/.
If you need a few strategies for chilling out, please check out my youtube channel. It’s not highly produced (I just barely know how to turn on my computer), but it’s heartfelt, and I’ve made it with IHS students in mind. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsONAHY5kYc8Kk2Dh8fa2eg.
Mostly, if you need help, please be courageous and tell someone. It’s a harrowing time, and many of us are maxed out, chronically worried, and trapped in a home with people we love who also drive us crazy. People often come to therapy looking for “coping skills”, and I always tell them their best coping skill is their people. Reaching out is a (sometimes excruciating) exercise in vulnerability. Still, when we finally say “I need help”, we often find that it isn’t just us.

Attendance Updates:
IHS Robo Calls Starting 10/26/20
Because of the importance of student attendance, on Monday, 10/26 Inglemoor will notifying parents/guardians of daily absences using our Robo Call system. If your child is going to be absent, please email the attendance office (ihsattendance@nsd.org) prior to the absence or no later than 48 hours after the absence.
If your child engages asynchronously, the Robo Call will be a reminder that your student has work to complete and after completing the work, they should email the teacher confirming that the assignment was completed asynchronously.
Just a friendly reminder that Parents/Guardians need to excuse their student's absences within 48 hours of the absence occurring. To excuse, please call 425-408-7210 or email ihsattendance@nsd.org or pkartchner@nsd.org with your students first and last name, ID # and what periods/days they will be missing so our attendance secretary can correctly code it. Thank you!

News From the School Nurse:
Changes in Immunization Requirements:
Starting August 1, 2020, all immunization records turned in to schools or childcare centers are required by state law to be medically verified. This means immunization records turned in to the school must be from a health care provider, or you must attach paperwork from a health care provider to your handwritten form that shows your child’s records are accurate. In addition, a complete immunization history is required prior to school attendance – there is no longer a 30-day grace period to submit missing vaccination dates.
Only health care provider verified vaccination records are accepted; we can no longer accept parent reported vaccination dates.
We can no longer grant a 30-day grace period to assemble missing records.
Parents and guardians of students whose records are out of compliance will be notified by the school nurse. Please follow up with your health care provider and submit updated records by email or fax (contact info below).
Please know that students will be unable to receive in-person instruction until their required immunizations are completed and appropriate documentation is submitted.
If your child already meets immunization requirements and has records on file with the school, you do not need to do anything. If you aren’t sure, compliance can be checked online at MyIR.net or by checking with your health care provider.
If you have further questions or concerns, please contact the Inglemoor High School Nurses.

From the ASB:
Veterans Day Assembly This year we are seeking faculty, parent, and family participation for our Veterans Day activities. We are planning an online assembly honoring each generation of service members and veterans. We humbly ask two things: First, we will be putting together a slideshow of photographs of service members. If there is a veteran or currently serving military member in your family you would like to honor, please send a photograph with name and approximate dates of service to https://mailfile.nsd.org/filedrop/ekowalski@nsd.org. And second, we are looking for a few speakers to talk about what the military and life as a veteran is like who have served anytime from World War II to the present. If you or someone you know might be willing to speak for 5-10 minutes on video recording about your or their experience in the military, please reach out to Elisabeth Kowalski (ekowalski@nsd.org).
ASB Cards Many students and families have reached out to us about purchasing ASB cards. Currently, ASB cards can only be purchased for students who are involved in a club that is attending conferences or competing. ASB card fees will be assessed to individual student accounts as the club member names are provided to us from the advisors. This year, cards will be broken up into semester 1 and semester 2. Each semester will have a $30 ASB card. This means that if a club or activity only competes during one semester the student will only be charged $30 for the semester that their club or activity is competing in. This formula will also be applied to sports when they begin as well.
As we enter different stages in the Northshore Learning Model Status, ASB cards may be available for purchase by all students. We will continue to update you as we enter new stages.
Clubs and Common Interest Groups: Club & Common Interest Group meetings are starting! All Vikings are encouraged and welcome to join any of our 40+ student organizations. Here is the full list of IHS student organizations meeting times & days: 2020-2021 Club Info. Students, don't worry if you missed any information sessions, you can watch Club Information Session Recordings by signing in with your student email and contact advisors with questions. You are also welcome to form your own club or Common Interest Group! Just follow the steps outlined on the ASB Website.
For any questions around ASB cards, activities or clubs please contact Elisabeth Kowalski ekowalski@nsd.org

PTSA needs you! We welcome everyone to join the PTSA. School looks different this year, and the needs are different. PTSA is actively responding to the different needs, finding new ways to support students, their families, and teachers. We would love your help and input. Join PTSA today, membership is $15 for an individual, or $28 for a family membership.
General Members meeting. Our next PTSA General Meeting is Thursday, November 19th at 7:00PM, via Zoom. The Zoom link will be posted on the PTSA Calendar page on Nov. 19th. Reflections is still on!
Art is not cancelled! 😊 Fortunately, creativity is still possible in 2020 and the Reflections Program is still happening, and will be virtual.
PTSA Reflections is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity. Students of all grades and abilities may participate by submitting original pieces of work in 6 categories: Dance, Musical Composition, Visual Arts, Film, Literature and Photography.
Students create a work of art and write a short artist statement. Judging is based on both the artwork and artist statement. Students artwork will be judged at the Local Council level, and may continue on to the State level, and even the National PTA level. Regardless of where a student places, our PTA will celebrate any student artist who submits a piece of art for Reflections.
Students create an artwork inspired by this year’s very fitting theme - “I matter because…”
