Since we last sent a Clery Campus Notice on Tuesday, October 17th, the NYU Department of Campus Safety received four additional reports of Motor Vehicle Thefts involving electric scooters, this time occurring in the Tisch Bike Racks, at 40 West 4th Street, in Manhattan. All four incidents may have been committed by the same suspect.
The first incident occurred on Tuesday, October 17th. A Campus Safety Officer reported that at 5:39 p.m. they witnessed the suspect attempting to steal an e-scooter. The officer stopped and questioned the suspect but they ran off.
The second incident occurred on Wednesday, October 18th. A student reported that at 2:25 p.m. they noticed the suspect stealing and riding off with an e-scooter.
The third incident occurred on Wednesday, October 18th. A student reported that they parked and locked their e-scooter at 12:45 p.m. When they returned at 7:20 p.m., the e-scooter was gone.
The fourth incident was reported today, October 19th. A student reported that they locked up their e-scooter sometime last week. On October 18th, they went back to the Tisch Bike Racks and noticed the e-scooter was gone.
Police have been made aware of these incidents.
The Department of Campus Safety has increased foot patrols in the Tisch Bike Racks and has increased active surveillance of the security cameras in the area. Additionally, the Department is working on adding additional security cameras and enhancing current cameras to provide clearer coverage of the area.
We continue to encourage the NYU community to remain vigilant and follow the Safety Tips below and
online to keep yourselves and your belongings safe. Please do not let people piggyback into the Tisch Bike Racks or any other NYU secured area.
Description of Reported Offenders:
The suspect is described as male presenting with a light complexion, short black hair and gray facial hair. In the past he has worn a gray baseball cap, light-blue button down a tie, light colored pants and gray sneakers. He has also worn a hoodie with the words "Wheels Up" on it.
