President's Message

Congratulations to the Emergency & Preparedness Committee for organizing such a fantastic collaborative event last weekend.  The Active Shooter Drill at Hazard Center was so realistic and was a valuable learning tool for the fire and police services.  If you haven’t seen the news coverage, be sure to click here! The media coverage for BOMA was first class and it confirms to the community that BOMA San Diego is in the forefront of local leadership for Building Owners and Managers.
It was very rewarding to see competitive service providers working so closely together; the security teams were outstanding.   Special thanks to Lisa Gualco and the Hazard Center Team and Ownership for volunteering their building for the event; it couldn’t have taken place without their participation.

BOMA San Diego's Annual TOBY & Membership Awards Gala 2016
Day At The Races 2016 Recap
This year’s Day at the Races was nothing short of a win-win. The Del Mar Racetrack gave us a beautiful day of classic San Diego summertime skies, and our members showed us their Speakeasy style with a 1920’s theme. The annual event is always a member-favorite and this year was no exception. Our members, supporting partners, and friends mingled over derby dining and drinks at the Il Palio, while many wagered their way to some winnings! Thor Emblem of ABM Onsite Services and Adela Gonzalez of AMS Paving, Inc. were the proud “lucky losers” of the day, taking home well deserved gift card prizes. “BOMA’s Day at the Races is something I look forward to each year,” said Event Chair Jess Susi of RSI Roofing & Solar. “This year had a record turnout and it didn't disappoint. Perfect weather, great food, beautiful people and exciting races. Don't miss it next year!”

Backpacks, rulers, and pens, oh my!
BOMA San Diego’s Community Service committee did it again and organized a successful Drive benefitting local foster youth.  Two weeks after hosting their biggest event of the year – the annual Summer Work Party - the Committee rallied and pulled off a school supply collection event benefiting local foster youth.  Walking into the August membership meeting at the Doubletree Hotel at the Hazard Center, the BOMA registration area looked more like a store’s back to school display with the mound of backpacks and boxes of school supplies that were collected for the Promises2kids Back-To-School Drive.

Government Affairs Update: Federal Homelessness Funding Formula Update
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has opened a public comment period for the Continuum of Care (CoC) Funding Formula to assist cities in addressing homelessness issues.
HUD’s current formula has been criticized locally and by others because it was felt the formula was not an appropriate barometer of need because of inclusion of determining factors such as age of housing stock and population growth lag as opposed to unhoused population numbers. The current formula essentially short-changed regions like San Diego despite having one of the largest homeless populations in the country.

“We’re extremely honored to be named a Best Place to Work in San Diego company again this year, and to have moved higher up in our ranking,” said Jeffrey Cavignac, CPCU, ARM, RPLU, president and managing principal of Cavignac & Associates.  “More, we’re very proud of the great input our employees gave the judges.  Our first priority is providing exceptional client service, but to do that, you first need to have happy employees.  We do all we can to provide an exceptional work environment that makes their jobs both rewarding and fun.”

Beyond Green Cleaning: New Certification Delivers A More Professionalized Janitorial Service
As property design and the maintenance of existing commercial property refines its focus on sustainability, there is an increased demand for property professionals to tailor their operations that supports higher performance with less environmental impact. Whereas investment in education has been largely focused at management level employees, many frontline building operators have been overlooked. Noticing an opportunity to enhance green cleaning practices and educate a sustainable mindset, Building Skills Partnership (BSP) in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council - Los Angeles chapter (USGBC-LA), the Building Owners and Managers Association of Greater Los Angeles (BOMA-GLA), leading janitorial firms, building owners, and the SEIU-United Service Workers West, developed and implemented the Green Janitor Education Program.

SDG&E's Energy Saving Tips For Your Office
1. Turning off machines when they are not in use can result in energy savings. There is a common misconception that screen savers reduce energy use by monitors; they do not. Automatic switching to sleep mode or manually turning monitors off is always the better energy-saving strategy.
2. To maximize savings with a laptop, put the AC adapter on a power strip that can be turned off (or will turn off automatically); the transformer in the AC adapter draws power continuously, even when the laptop is not plugged into the adapter.
