Deuteronomy 34:4-8
Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it.”  And Moses the servant of the Lord died there in Moab, as the Lord had said.  He buried him in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is.  Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone.  The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the time of weeping and mourning was over.
New International Version (NIV)
We do not always get to realize our dreams for the future.  Once at another church we were experiencing great growth in our congregation.  We believed we needed more room.  So we prayed and found a piece of property and started our due diligence.  At every turn we ran into challenges.  I said to Melanie, “I don’t understand why we can’t purchase the land.”  She said, “Maybe you are not the one who will lead the church to buy the land.”  I was a bit offended at the thought.  “If not me then who?”  I wondered aloud.

Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt and all the way to the border of the promised-land.  Before he died, Moses was given a panoramic view of the promised-land.  Looking down from Mt. Nebo he saw all that God would give his people.  Then he died and the Lord buried him.  Nobody knows where exactly he was buried.

Does this seem cruel to us?  Why see the land if he didn’t get to lead the people into their new home.  Moses fulfilled his leadership opportunity.  He knew God face to face, led the people and prepared them to enter.  Then he handed the “baton” to Joshua to lead the people in.

God knows exactly what he is doing.  We can trust him to fulfill his purpose in our lives.  Our work is to love him with all that we are and to finish all that he gives us to do.  The Kingdom of God does not depend on any one of us.  God has wonderful plans for his people beyond our own lifespans.  Trust him.  He will lead you all the way home to himself.

Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for all that you have shown us in this life.  Help us to walk with you all the way through the finish line.  We pray that you would find us faithful to finish all that you give us to do.  Thank you for all of your people.  Continue to raise up leaders to finish your Great Commission we pray, in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
