What time is it? My friend Dr. John Adams loves Jesus, visibly, audibly, palpably. I knew when we studied together in our Ph. D. work that he was brilliant. These days, I love the way John is loving the church he pastors, First Baptist Church of Easley, South Carolina. He is preaching a series of sermons called, “It’s time.” This season is to culminate with a revival in which I will preach. There is no revival kit that I can take with me to his church. But every time I talk to him, my heart is set ablaze with holy fire. Join me in praying that I will be revived as I serve with him in those meetings.
What time is it? John preached to his church, “It’s time for the church to live in holy anticipation of Christ’s return.” A new friend thought the church might be disheartened that Christ had not yet returned. He was surprised to hear that we still believe Christ will return. I was surprised he was surprised. Are you? Like many of you, I have lived through the “Late, Great Planet Earth,” and the “Left Behind” novels. Many of the predictions made by the prognosticators did not come to pass on their schedule. The good news is God knows his schedule, even though we don’t.
The disciples asked Jesus for signs of his return. He predicted that they would be persecuted. He also said the gospel of the kingdom would be preached in the whole world before he returns. In his own words, we learn from Jesus himself that he will return personally, visibly, powerfully and victoriously. Jesus himself will come. The whole world will see him. He will come powerfully in the clouds. Everyone will know he is in charge that day. Jesus wins in the end as he gathers his people. This simple outline has sustained me as it comes straight from these verses. There is more, as we know. In Paul’s writings and the book of Revelation we learn further details about the end of time. But when Jesus’ disciples wanted to know, this is what he said. Let’s hold on to this blessed hope. It will be an anchor for our souls, come what may. What time is it? It is time to pray for renewal in our hearts as Christ’s return draws closer.
