John 6:66-68
From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.
Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life."

New International Version (NIV)
Is Jesus ever just a means to our end?  If we do right by Jesus, won’t he do right by us and give us what we want?  Quid pro quo, right?  At the beginning of this chapter, Jesus asks his disciples where they can buy food for the multitude in the wilderness.  John tells us that Jesus already knew what he was going to do.  After showing the need of the people, Jesus supplied it by multiplying a boy’s sack lunch.

The next day the crowd found Jesus on the other side of the lake and requested another happy meal.  “Our ancestors were fed in the wilderness.  Do it again.”  Jesus’ response may sound harsh.  Again he understands the motives of those around him.  So he encouraged them to find more than a free meal in him.  Jesus not only gave bread but he himself was the bread of life.

After the fickle crowd moved on without a meal, Jesus asked if his disciples would leave also.  Were they just in it for the meals?  What if God doesn’t give us what we ask for on our timing and terms.  Will we still follow him?  Peter has it right:  “Where would we go?  You have the words of life.”  We don’t live by bread or clothes or things, but by the words which comes from God’s mouth.  Jesus is not just a means to our end to fulfill our goals for life.  No.  Jesus is the end itself.  Let’s follow Jesus today.
Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for all you have done for us.  Let us never love the things of God more than we love God.  Help us to see you as the goal of our spiritual lives in every way.  We will not go anywhere today without you.  Help us to see your presence everywhere we look, to hear your voice over every other sound.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download

Joyfully,
