I am pleased to see the publication of the second issue of our e-newsletter. It has been a busy semester for us and we are delighted to see so many students and faculty in the library. Shortly before the semester started, we saw the arrival of new tech in the library. A 3D printer and two 65” screens are now on the main floor of the library. We hope you will be excited by these additions as much as we are.
3D printers in the library are in high use. This fall, the goal is to work primarily with faculty interested in introducing 3D printing in their classes. Students in these classes are encouraged to connect with IT to develop 3D projects to be printed. The 3D printer has been moved into the public space on the main floor with signage to begin introducing the service to the student community at large.
Two 65” screens with walk up capabilities have been introduced to the first-floor library space for students to use for collaborative work. These units allow for casting from any mobile device as well as flipping over to white board capabilities. New tables and privacy screens are being introduced around these new screens that will allow for groups to collaborate effectively in the public space.
We invite you to come to the library and check out these new features!
Warm regards,
Chuck Vesei
Library Director and Librarian of the Colleges

| Polarization is affecting Politics: How divided are we really?
|
In collaboration with HWS Votes, share your opinions and see what your peers think about polarizing political topics pertaining to the upcoming Presidential Election.
Look for the HWS Votes display on the second floor of the library, where you'll have the chance to share your opinion on polarizing topics such as legalization of abortion and polling stations on college campuses. Explore other topics related to voting, such as misinformation, and find related books for further reading.
When you're done, be sure to register to vote or check your voter registration online.

| An Urban Legend from the Archives |
There aren’t many legends or ghost stories on campus (or at least, they don’t make their way into the Archives) but there is one that keeps reappearing from year to year:
The Lady of the Lake.
The legend states that the statue in Pulteney Park enjoys her view of Seneca Lake, and over the years, if anyone dared to raise a building in front of her, it would mysteriously burn down. No one seems to know when the legend started, and the only written account was published in the Pulteney Street Survey in 2013.
In reality, there has never been a building there, ever. There is a break in the row houses because, until the late-1960s, Washington Street continued down the hill to Exchange Street. Also, the statue, whose real name is Our Lady of Peace, has only been there since 1939. She’s younger than Jimmy Carter!

In need of a scary movie? |
Halloween is right around the corner, and there's no better time to take advantage of the library's subscriptions to services like Kanopy and Swank.
You can access streaming video content for free with your HWS credentials, including a vast collection of movies. You can find both services under the "Databases A-Z" listing on the library website.
Looking for a perfect Halloween movie to watch with your friends? Kanopy provides access to almost the entire collection of A24 films includes cult classic horror picks like Midsomar, Bodies Bodies Bodies and Pearl.
