Do you ever wonder, “How did I get here?” Elijah must have wondered on Mount Horeb when God asked, “Why are you here?” When we look back at our lives, as the poem Footprints in the Sand suggests, we can see times when God was carrying us. Somebody reading these words wonders, “Can I get up and go forward today?” You can. Why?
When we look backward we have to look upward! God has started a good work in you as a believer and in your church as a body. Paul remembered Lydia and the ladies at the place of prayer down by the riverside in Philippi. There he shared Christ and God started a church in Lydia’s living room! Everyone in the church knew that God started that church. Before long Paul and Silas were thrown in prison, where they promptly sang a seismic hymn, leading to an earthquake and setting all the prisoners free. Only God could have done that, and they knew it. So do we, when we look back at our lives.
When we look forward, we need to look upward. God is faithful. Never forget this truth: He is faithful and he fills us full with his faith. God always finishes what he starts. Someday when Christ returns, we will look back at all God has done. But today, let’s look forward to God’s work in our lives until Christ returns. It turns out God is not finished with you. The same one who brought you here will get you all the way home. Bank on it!
