DCPS Community,
As we shared last week, DC Public Schools (DCPS) will continue learning at home through the end of the school year. We acknowledge that May 29 is prior to our anticipated end of the 2019-2020 School Year in June. Further, we realize this is not ideal for many of our families as it may disrupt other arrangements you have planned.
Please know that we do not take adjustments to our calendar lightly, and, as a district, we are doing all we can to take into account the needs of our students and families while also balancing the planning that is necessary due to our public health crisis. This calendar shift will give us the opportunity to preserve time for the option of additional, targeted summer learning, as well as the start of SY20-21 when health conditions are more favorable.
We know you may have questions about what the end of the school year looks like on topics such as graduation, summer school, and enrollment for next school year. This situation is new ground for all of us and thank you for your patience as we work to provide more details on how the school year will conclude.
In the more immediate, we want to know how we are doing. Your partnership during this unprecedented moment has allowed our students to continue their learning even while our classrooms are now phone calls, video lessons, and Teams chats.
Family Survey on Learning at Home
During this period of school building closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are reaching out to families to get an understanding of how learning at home is going for you and to receive feedback to help our teachers and staff continue to provide support.
Please take a few minutes to complete our learning at home family survey. You’ll be asked about student learning activities, technology you may be using, and support structures you may need, as well as general feedback. Select the language you wish to take the survey in by using the menu in the upper-righthand corner.
Families may also take the survey over the phone by calling 202-671-2617 on weekdays between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. If you have multiple children enrolled in DCPS, please fill out the survey for your oldest child first. You will have an option to fill it out for additional children at the end. The survey will close on Wednesday, May 6.

TV Lessons Expand to All Grades
As we embark on six more weeks of online learning, I encourage you to check out our video lessons — now available for all grades — airing daily on local cable TV. Beginning each morning at 9:30 am, you can turn on DKN, DCTV, or DCTV Enrichment for lessons from teachers and educational partners that align to learning at home materials your school provided.
Students can learn more about rhythmic accompaniment in their music lesson; expand their research and writing skills in English Language Arts; and deepen their understanding of probability in mathematics. School librarians are also presenting great stories for Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders that are connected to life and learning with DCPS Story Time lessons.

Over the past six weeks, we printed millions of pages of learning packets, served nearly 200,000 meals to students, and distributed a total of 26,000 technology devices or personal hotspots to families in need — not to mention the countless hours of enrichment and learning led by our educators both online and off — all in our commitment to place students first.

Como mencionamos la semana pasada, las Escuelas Públicas del Distrito de Columbia (DCPS) continuarán con el aprendizaje en casa hasta el fin del año escolar. Sabemos que el 29 de mayo es antes de nuestro anticipado final del año escolar 2019-2020 en junio. Además, estamos conscientes de que esto no es ideal para muchas de nuestras familias, ya que puede interrumpir otros arreglos que hayan planeado.
Tenga en cuenta que no tomamos a la ligera las modificaciones a nuestro calendario, y, como distrito, estamos haciendo todo lo posible para tener en cuenta las necesidades de nuestros estudiantes y familias, mientras equilibramos la planificación necesaria debido a la crisis de salud pública. Este cambio de calendario nos dará la oportunidad de preservar el tiempo para la opción de aprendizaje de verano adicional y específico, así como el inicio del año escolar 2020-2021 (AE20-21) cuando las condiciones de salud sean más favorables.

Encuesta familiar acerca del aprendizaje en casa
Durante este período de cierre de edificios escolares debido a la pandemia del COVID-19, nos estamos comunicando con las familias para saber cómo les está yendo en casa y para que recibamos sus comentarios para ayudar a nuestros maestros y personal seguir proporcionando apoyo.
Favor de tomar unos minutos para completar la encuesta familiar de aprendizaje en casa. Se le preguntará sobre las actividades de aprendizaje de los estudiantes, la tecnología que puede estar utilizando y las estructuras de apoyo que pueda necesitar, así como comentarios generales. Seleccione el idioma en el que desea completar la encuesta utilizando el menú en la esquina superior a la derecha.

Lecciones por televisión se expanden a todos los grados
Mientras comenzamos seis semanas más de aprendizaje en línea, los animo a que vean nuestras lecciones en video, ahora disponibles para todos los grados, que se transmiten diariamente en televisión por cable local. A partir de cada mañana a las 9:30 a.m., pueden activar DKN, DCTV o DCTV Enrichment para obtener lecciones de maestros y socios educativos que se alinean con los materiales de aprendizaje en el hogar que proporcionó su escuela.
Los estudiantes pueden aprender más sobre el acompañamiento rítmico en su clase de música; expandir sus habilidades de investigación y de escritura en artes del lenguaje inglés; y fortalecer su comprensión de la probabilidad en matemáticas.
