2 Kings 17:13-15
The Lord warned Israel and Judah through all his prophets and seers: “Turn from your evil ways. Observe my commands and decrees, in accordance with the entire Law that I commanded your ancestors to obey and that I delivered to you through my servants the prophets.”  But they would not listen and were as stiff-necked as their ancestors, who did not trust in the Lord their God.  They rejected his decrees and the covenant he had made with their ancestors and the statutes he had warned them to keep. They followed worthless idols and themselves became worthless. They imitated the nations around them although the Lord had ordered them, “Do not do as they do.”
New International Version (NIV)
"You are what you eat," the nutritionists tell us.  So I try to eat five to nine fruits and vegetables a day.  Some days I wonder, "Does Blackberry Cobbler qualify as a fruit serving?"  Either way, healthy food leads to better health.

"You will become like whatever you worship," said the prophets of the Old Testament.  Remember God told his people to abandon idols and worship only him.  But the nations around them had fertility gods and goddesses.  Worshiping them was supposed to bring them good luck with their crops.  Many of these gods were portrayed by sensual idols, leading the Israelites into sensual sin.

The problem with false gods, as Christopher Wright observed, is this:  False gods never fail to fail.  Consequently those who worship them will also fail.  They are worthless and they leave their worshipers worthless as well.

On the other hand, we could worship the God of infinite worth.  The good news about our God is he never fails to succeed.  To worship him, is to acknowledge his worth.  By worshiping the worthy one, we can never become worthless.  No wonder all of heaven sings to Jesus who died for us, "The Lamb is worthy to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise."
Pray with me:
God of infinite worth, how can we ever thank you enough for all you have done for us.  Deliver us from devotion to worthless things.  As we focus on you this week, teach us more about who you are, so that we may grow in Christ-likeness.  In the worthy name of Jesus we pray.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
