Romans 4:18
Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”
New International Version (NIV)
What happened to our hope?  I sometimes hear Christians describe their despair about the world as though not even God can make things better.  Don’t we know better than that?

The disciples on the road to Emmaus confessed to the stranger who joined them that they “had hoped that Jesus was the Messiah.”  When Jesus died so did their hope.  Hope moved from the present to the past tense for them.

Paul tells a better story.  Against all hope, Abraham hoped.  He had no human reason to believe that as senior citizens, he and Sarah would become parents.  Preposterous, right?  That is what he thought.  We are wise not to tell God what he can and cannot do.

What has God promised us?  Let us not doubt his goodness today.  Against all hope, we hold on to hope in Christ.  He rose from the dead.  What could ever be too hard for him?  As the writer of Proverbs put it:  “There is surely a hope for you and it will not be cut off.”  Hope is not just a wish.  It is a confident expectation.  Let your hope lead you all the way to faith, as it did for our father Abraham!
Pray with me:
Father, forgive us for losing hope.  Restore our confidence in Christ.  Remind us that the last page of our lives has not yet been written.  Let us hope in you until you renew our strength today.  Then let us soar on wings like eagles, run and not grow weary, walk and not faint.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
