Embracing The Arts at St M
“When I say artist I mean the one who is building things … some with a brush – some with a shovel – some choose a pen.”
~ Artist Jackson Pollock
At St. Michael's, we encourage all of our students to be "art smart", meaning, we all have within us the ability to be "artists", to approach tasks from different perspectives and to problem-solve while developing creativity, confidence, focus and perseverance.
As St. Michael's strives to expose our students to award-winning writers,  acclaimed dancers and artists, we were very excited to welcome some amazing creative guests to our campuses this week:
  • Acclaimed local dentist and watercolor artist Dr. W. Baxter Perkinson shared his creative talents at both of our campuses and inspired our students with insights and tips on watercolor painting (including how to embrace light vs. dark and cool vs. warm colors to denote distance and perspective), and encouraged our Dragons to view artistic accidents as true opportunities. Thank you, Dr. Perkinson!
  • Bravo! The RB2 company of the Richmond Ballet gave a sneak peek premier performance of scenes from their upcoming presentation of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at our Lower School on Tuesday. Through audience participation, they reminded all of our students that they too can find joy in creativity and dance!
  • St. Michael's is pleased to be partnering with the Richmond Ballet for the second year to bring their esteemed year-long program, "Minds in Motion" to our Lower School campus this year. The 2016-2017 MIM year will center around the culture, history and traditions of the Rappahannock Indian Tribe. In conjunction with physical education and reading programs, our fourth grade students will receive instruction from Richmond Ballet professional teaching artists and musicians for one class per week.  The program includes both on-campus and off-campus enrichment field trips. It concludes with a very memorable May performance, alongside students from across central Virginia, at Richmond's Center Stage.
 Important Announcements:
Test of St M Emergency Notification System: Oct. 5
St. Michael’s subscribes to an text-based emergency notification system created especially for schools, called ParentReach, to communicate quickly and efficiently in the event of an emergency or a school closure. We will conduct a test of the emergency notification system at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5. The effectiveness of the test will be monitored by the system. The display name on a St. Michael’s emergency text message will be 30939. Please do not reply to the text OR call the school to verify receipt of the message.  If a family has students at both campuses, they will receive two texts as part of the test (one for each campus).

We will also do our best to post emergency updates and school closing information on our St M Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as on the home page of the School website.
Please contact the front office if your contact information changes to ensure that emergency information is communicated to everyone in a timely manner.
