Navigating Racialization in the Federal Workforce: PhD Candidate's Research Wins Award
| |
PhD Candidate Emma Northcott
|
| PhD Candidate Emma Northcott, is the lead author, with co-authors Dr. Sheila Pandey and TSPPPA faculty Dr. Sanjay K. Pandey, and Dr. Eiko Strader, of "The Asian American Experience in the Federal Workforce: How Employees Navigate Racialization" which won the prestigious "Best Conference Paper by a Public and Nonprofit Division Doctoral Student" Award from the Academy of Management (AOM) Public and Nonprofit Division. The paper uses theories of racialization to help reveal how Asian Americans can be rendered invisible and denied leadership opportunities in the federal bureaucracy. Despite systemic exclusions and interpersonal mistreatment, Asian American bureaucrats adopt various strategies to succeed in their roles and improve the organizational culture of their workplaces. The paper urges public administration scholars and practitioners to move beyond the Black-White binary to expand study of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the public sector.
Northcott also received the 2024 “Top Reviewer” Award by the Public and Nonprofit Division of AOM for providing high quality reviews for conference paper submissions.
