On Monday, June 20, at 4:15 p.m., the Department of Campus Safety received a report of a robbery that occurred at approximately 4:25 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, in Washington Square Park.
The victims, NYU students, reported that they were approached by an unknown individual while sitting in the grass area of the park near Bobst Library. The individual was carrying a box of fruit snacks that appeared to be for sale. They had their other hand in their pocket and told the pair of students that they had a weapon before asking one student for their cell phone. The student complied, after which the unknown individual called over another person who was part of a group, and together they asked the second student for their phone. Upon receiving both phones, they activated each phone’s Venmo app and sent money to themselves before proceeding to delete the app from the victims’ phones.
No injuries were reported. A police report was filed by the victims in connection with this incident and police are currently investigating. No further details are available.
Description of Suspects: The first suspect is described as female presenting, dark complexioned, 5'5", 160 pounds, with medium length braids and wearing a gray hoodie. The second suspect is described as male presenting, dark complexioned, 5'8", 170 pounds, wearing a navy hoodie and dark washed jeans.
