We grow a lot when we do not get what we want.
We grow a lot when we do not get what we want.

Isaiah 30:15, 18
This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says:
“In repentance and rest is your salvation,
    in quietness and trust is your strength,
    but you would have none of it."

Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you;
    therefore he will rise up to show you compassion.
For the Lord is a God of justice.
    Blessed are all who wait for him!

New International Version (NIV)
                A friend who is a serious disciple observed, “We grow a lot when we do not get what we want.”  My experience confirms his wise observation.

                God knew what he wanted for Israel in Isaiah’s day.  Repentance and rest would be their salvation, quietness and trust their strength.  Unfortunately, Israel did not want what God wanted.  So they decided to trust in their own resources.  “We can outrun our enemies,” they thought.  They did run from their enemies, but they did not escape.  Still God bared his heart to his people.  He longed to be gracious to them and show them compassion.

                We could spend our lives trying to make our own will for our lives into reality.  But what if we prayed with Jesus, “Not my will but yours be done”?  What would that life look like?  God has not changed.  If we repent and rest in him instead of our own abilities we will find salvation.  Today is a good day to be still.  We know for sure that God is still God.  What he wants for us is not onerous but good because God is good.  Repent.  Rest.  Be quiet.  Trust.  Live.
Pray with me:
Father, forgive us for mistrusting you.  Today we return to you and rest in you.  Quiet our hearts.  Teach us trust.  Let us not run away from the Lover of our souls.  We don’t want you to let us have it our way, today.  Your will be done.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
