1 Samuel 8:6-8
But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord.   And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.   As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.
New International Version (NIV)
We are all looking for a leader!  Samuel loved the Lord and led Israel well, but his sons, like Eli’s sons did not walk in the way of the Lord.  Fed up with the setup of the corrupt judges, the Israelites just wanted to be like the nations around them.

Samuel took his feelings of rejection to God who said, “They have not rejected you but me.”  God had always been Israel’s only King.  Psalm 106:15 in the King James Version says God gives his people what they want and with it “leanness of soul.”  Israel exchanged the King of Kings for Saul who definitely could not fill God’s shoes.

One of our temptations is to find a substitute for God.  If only there were some God who would do what we want – a cooperative, pliable God susceptible to our suggestions.  The true God is a sovereign King of the universe.  He is not our personal assistant.  Nor is he subject to human manipulation.  As his name suggests, “God is who God is.”  He is not a good hobby, but he makes a great King of our lives.
Pray the words of a hymn with me:
Father, help us to love you today not just to escape hell or gain heaven but solely because you are our God and our eternal King.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
