Readers, friends, and followers often ask where I get ideas for my articles. I typically pause to answer, because for me, the answer is simple. I don’t have to go far. Actually, I don’t have to go anywhere. Simply put, ideas abound around me. Every day, literally popping up as an opportunity, rolling around in my mind until I have the time to pause and put the ideas down on a sheet of paper – or in this case, a computer screen. It is just faster. Ahem... KEEP READING

Unlocking the Mind: The Power of Nutritional Supplements for Mental Health
I lost my mom to suicide nearly 30 years ago and there is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about her. In honor of September being Suicide Awareness Month, I thought it might be helpful to mention a few nutritional supplements that help promote healthy mood upliftment. These will certainly not take the place of a qualified mental health professional or organization; they are relevant in terms of support.
We must always start with a solid foundation of nutrient support when talking about mental health. That begins with a multivitamin that will provide many cofactors for proper neurotransmitter production along with a probiotic to maintain healthy gut- brain connection. Other helper nutrients should include adequate doses of Omega 3 fatty acids & Vitamin D3 for their anti-inflammatory & mood uplifting properties.
Targeted nutrients like methylfolate or MTHF have been well studied for their role in supporting neurotransmitter production. Other building block nutrients as I call them like 5-HTP support proper serotonin production while the herb Mucuna supports dopamine production in the brain. Another pair of helpful nutrients include L-theanine, a green tea extract, & PharmaGABA both support GABA production, which provides calming brain signaling.
Michael Briggs, PharmD, CNC, ICCT serves as COO of Lionville Natural Pharmacy and has been published in The Professional Guide to Complementary & Alternative Therapies, Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Older Adults. The Nursing Drug Handbook Series, and Pharmacotherapy.
If you find yourself facing mental health challenges, there are resources available to provide support.
