A Message from Federation’s New CEO, Gil Preuss
 
It is my honor to address you in this first edition of our Federation 5 newsletter. As the new CEO of The Jewish Federation, I am excited to be joining this vibrant community and look forward to what we will achieve together over the coming months and years.

Greater Washington is home to one of the most diverse, passionate and thriving Jewish populations in North America. It includes many of the strongest, most innovative and important Jewish institutions and organizations in the country, with leaders from around the world calling Greater Washington their home.

An Update on Federation’s Hurricane Harvey Relief
 
With an eye on South Florida and Hurricane Irma, we are working in collaboration with The Jewish Federations of North America as recovery efforts continue in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. The support from the Greater Washington Jewish community has been tremendous, with more than $118,000 donated to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund as of September 5. An additional grant of $50,000 from Federation’s Emergency Reserve Fund was unanimously approved this week by our Executive Committee.

A Jewish Response to Addiction and the Power of Recovery
 
September is Addiction Recovery Awareness Month and Federation is committed to bringing greater access to addiction prevention resources for the Greater Washington community. From education to awareness initiatives, to resources and community events, Federation and our partners are working to strengthen the infrastructure of treatment and prevention programs to help those who are struggling.

Grounded, Centered and Connected by Community
 
As Fall arrives, the leaves that waved to the heavens change color and make their way down to the ground. As we near the Autumnal Equinox, the hours of light and darkness become more centered and in balance, at least for a while. Nature, in concrete ways, and the High Holidays in words and rituals, may be telling us something important about being “grounded” and “centered.”
