“Pull a thread here and you’ll find it’s attached to the rest of the world.”
Nadeem Aslam
At St. Michael's, we strive to both broaden students’ awareness of the wider world and increase their toolboxes for tackling its challenges and opportunities.
How do we enrich our student's understanding of world interconnectedness?
This week, our Lower School welcomed New York Times best-selling author, Judy Schachner. Ms. Schachner mesmerized our students with stories about her creative process and encouraged our students to keep journals with photos, quotes, sketches and words that inspire them as these journals become a wonderful resource for story ideas. She also reminded them to embrace failures as learning experiences and to believe that "the stories in our own lives are worth writing about."
As part of their study of the ocean, our second graders had a Skype video chat with a marine biologist from The Turtle Hospital in Marathon, Florida. From learning about how turtles at the hospital are rescued and cared for to how our students can do their part to protect sea turtles and ocean life by keeping trash and chemicals out of waterways, this virtual classroom experience was the highlight of the week!
Important learning happens outside of the classroom as well as inside. Our eighth graders returned on Friday from a  two-day camping trip to Camp Chanco that was filled with team-building exercises, fellowship, self-discovery and connection to the natural world.
Be sure to check out our St M Facebook and Twitter pages for additional photos and video of this week's learning adventures.

Baseball Anyone?

The Athletic Department has received a significant number of inquiries from families about starting a St. Michael's Middle School baseball program. Our response, given the number of sports available for students (7 co-ed, 4 for girls, 2 for boys), will be to explore the level of interest that families might have for a club level program. While still in the investigative stage, a baseball program would likely mirror the boys lacrosse clinic that meets once per week and is coached by parent volunteers. Beginning as early as this fall, times for the clinic could be in the mid- to late-afternoon during the week or on weekends depending on availability of a field as well as volunteers coaches' schedules.

Those with interest in the program are asked to complete this survey http://goo.gl/forms/tDuJBF8Jn0 aimed at gauging interest. Please contact Wally Kern with questions. Thanks!
A Friendly Reminder

For the safety and supervision of our Lower School students, the yellow poles at the start of carpool line will not be removed until 7:55 a.m.
