Vintage Full Rounds

Over the years, for various reasons (and sometimes for no particular reason), Josh occasionally has made large full round spheres. These may be almost the same size as traditional Simpson Planet paperweights, but they are perfectly round and have no flattened/polished base. Today, we've made three types of these unusual vintage spheres available online.

Landscape Spheres

"Landscape Spheres" are orbs containing a planetary core that Josh created specificially to collaborate with artist Wendy Besett who added a unique landscape scene. Of this work created in the early and mid-2000s, Besett writes, "My collaboration with Josh was as much an excuse for old friends to get together and play as it was to produce art. As an artist experimenting with colorants in glass, I liked the idea of balancing the earthiness of my Vermont-inspired landscapes with the cosmic feeling of Josh’s Planets. Our spheres felt magically both ethereal and grounded.”

There are just six of these unique collaborative works in the studio today.

Vintage Morito Sphere with Box

Thirty-four years ago, Josh was commissioned to make Planet paperweights for longtime glass collector and good friend Yuko Morito, an inventor who later created the “Josh Simpson Sphere Museum” in Kanazawa, Japan. Each of these New Mexico orbs is similar - for example, with the same style of spaceship - but different from the others. Just to be sure that enough of them came out well, Josh made more than were needed for the commission. We thought we had sold them all, but surprise! We still have three of these treasures in studio!

4" VINTAGE New Mexico Round

Created in 2001, this is a completely unique blue New Mexico Sphere, slightly less than 4” in diameter. It is entirely spherical, with no flattened/polished base. Made of classic Simpson New Mexico glass, this is the only "planet" of this type and size in the studio and the only one that Josh's current staff have ever seen.

The orb comes with a burl stand specially made for the larger than usual work. Note the photo including a silver dollar for size reference.

NEW EXHIBIT AT SPRINGFIELD MUSEUMS

A few weeks ago, we announced a special exhibit at the Springfield Museums that would have coincided with--and celebrated--Josh's 75th birthday on August 17. This date has changed!
