Scholarships Reduce Financial Strain

In our October 2021 issue, we reported that the UNC Center for Urban Education (CUE) was awarded $850,000 from the Colorado Department of Higher Education’s Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative (COSI) Back to Work grant. The majority of that money, which will support the Center over a three-year period, will support students in the form of scholarships.

For spring semester 2022, 80% of our students will be awarded at least $1,500 toward their tuition and fees. Some of them shared their thoughts about how the scholarship funds will affect them.

Whitney Cyriacks

(pictured above) Cyriacks says this scholarship takes a huge weight off of her shoulders. Now she has the "headspace" to worry less about how she'll manage tuition and focus more on becoming a successful teacher.

Jeremy Alvarez

Since transferring to UNC for the fall 2020 semester, Alvarez says he has had overwhelming support from CUE and cannot fathom a program that is more deserving of the grant. As a non-traditional student who has pursued college on and off over the past 10 years, Jeremy is proud to say that he will graduate this coming semester. He is considering pursuing a graduate degree.
"I want to nurture a joyful and safe community for students."

Brittany Curtis

Curtis says these funds will help her push on to achieve her dream of becoming a teacher. She intends to use education as an important tool for changing the world.
"I want to build a whole community in the classroom and bring everyone together."

Chuda Dhungana

Dhungana is student teaching and doesn’t have another job. He says the scholarship will lighten his financial burden and allow him to focus on learning.

"The joy I experience from certain moments is priceless: the funny things students say, their silly habits, the insightful questions they ask, and the amusing stories they write."

Angelina Ballesteros

Ballesteros says these funds allow her not to worry about how she will pay for tuition and books. She will be able to focus more on her studies and further her goal of becoming an early childhood education teacher.
"I am honored to be receiving the COSI scholarship."

Flor Contreras

(pictured at bottom of photo) Contreras says the scholarship money helps her (and her family) continue her studies and accomplish her dream of becoming an elementary school teacher.
"I look forward to making my classroom a home for my community."

Paul Lang

Lang says the funds help him avoid the stress of missing class because he doesn't have child care for his children.
"I am thankful for this amazing opportunity."

Congrats, December Graduates!

Congratulations to our December 2021 graduates! We wish you all the best for your future.
