Quality of Care: Maternal Health and Childbirth - 2023 Edition

The quality of care delivered to patients in California and across the US continues to be monitored and reported. This is a set of quality measures CHCF has put together focusing on maternal health and childbirth. The charts from this dataset exhibit that while California has made progress on the quality of care provided to women during their pregnancies and deliveries, there is still room for improvement.

Maternity Care in California - 2023 Edition

Maternity Care in California: Delivering the Data provides an overview of the delivery of maternity care in California, using the most recent data. When available, comparisons of California data to national averages, as well as metrics by race/ethnicity and trend data, are provided.

Is California failing women on maternal care?

A new report from the state auditor reveals how difficult it is for the state to keep track of vulnerable mothers-to-be. The findings from this report highlight some of the severe outcomes affecting maternal health. For example, in 2020 California reported the highest maternal mortality rate in a decade. Other findings include the creation of "maternity care deserts", and that two state departments (DHCS and CDPH) fail to track the Comprehensive Perinatal Care Program.
The mission of the POD Center is to achieve health equity by applying interdisciplinary science and technology to prevent health disparities during the perinatal period.
Our vision is for every child and parent to have an equal opportunity to maximize their health and life potential.
