Data Tools for Academic Leaders

The Office of Analytics, Institutional Research, and Effectiveness (AIRE) is here to support you in your role!

One of our primary goals is to ensure you are aware of the data and tools available to help guide your decision-making.

Key Data Platforms

OAC is KU’s primary business intelligence platform, offering dashboards and reports on academic, financial, employee, and research data.

Log in with your KU credentials.
Some dashboards are open-access; others require FERPA training and role-based permission. For restricted dashboards, consult the OAC Access page to identify the appropriate contact.

Featured tool: Strategic Alignment Metrics Dashboard– used by deans and administrators in strategic alignment presentations and academic program review.

Tableau Visual Analytics

Visual Analytics dashboards primarily focus on academic-related data.

One useful resource is the Retention and Graduation Rates Comparisons dashboard, which shows how KU compares to selected peers.
VPN is required for off-campus access.

Academic Analytics

Tools that provide leaders with comparative research productivity data.

Benchmarking: Compare KU’s research activity to peer institutions.
Analysis on Demand: Interactive analyses based on frequently asked questions.
Research Insight: Identify KU experts and explore funding opportunities.

Access is role-based—chairs can view department-level data; deans and vice provosts have broader access. Additional training and departmental approval may be required.

Faculty Insight

KU’s faculty activity management platform.

Helps faculty identify funding opportunities, generate Promotion & Tenure CVs, and share their research activities.
Chairs can request reports to support departmental needs.

Student Surveys of Teaching (SST)

Survey results are available in Qualtrics dashboards.

As a department chair, you are considered a Unit Leader and should have SST dashboard access for your unit. The Unit Leader Resources page includes dashboard links, a list of users with access, and instructions for requesting updates to who has access to your unit’s results.
The SST distribution schedule is updated each term.

Campus Climate & Experience Surveys

On behalf of the Provost, AIRE surveys the core constituents of KU at least every three years. Results and recommendations for recently administered surveys are made available to inform your planning.

Undergraduate students: National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)
Graduate Students: Graduate Student Experience Survey (GSES)
Faculty: COACHE Faculty Job Satisfaction Survey
Staff: Docking Staff Job Satisfaction Survey with a plan to administer Great College’s to Work for in the near future.

Qualtrics Survey Tool

KU provides free access to Qualtrics for faculty, staff, and students.

A survey platform for building and distributing professional-quality surveys and reports for administrative and research purposes.

Support & Staying Informed

AIRE sends regular updates on available tools and insights. Past newsletters—such as our recent focus on retention and graduation—are archived on the AIRE website under “Campus Messages”.

AIRE hosts monthly open lab sessions each fall and spring. Dates are posted on the Training tab in OAC.
