PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Last week, Fr. Andy and I met with 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students to remind them of the main points of the Technology Usage Agreement that is signed by students and parents annually.
We encourage you to review these policies and consider adopting all or most of the same expectations for your child while using technology outside of school or at home.
The purpose of these policies and expectations is for us to work together to ensure the safety of all our students while recognizing the opportunities offered by technology for educational excellence and to form 21st-century digital citizens.
Students were reminded that technology is a privilege, not a right.  We understand that many children view their access to their devices as meeting a basic human need, but at OLV and at home, we encourage you to cultivate the idea of technology and access to devices and the internet as a privilege.
We know that many students have access to technology at home. We reminded students that their usage of technology outside of school becomes a school matter if their behavior or actions impact OLV.
According to our technology agreement, students commit to managing their digital identity and reputation by representing themselves in a way that respects the values of the Catholic Church. We encourage you to adopt the same approach as a family. Agree with your child that they will always remember your family values when using technology and represent themselves accordingly with positive, safe, legal, and ethical behaviors, including during their social interactions.
Please remind your child to always use kind and respectful behavior towards others when using technology, being careful to follow school policies and local, state, and federal cyber-bullying laws. Students are required to inform a teacher or member of staff if they know about any inappropriate material or misuse of technology, cyberbullying, or threats made using technology. We encourage you to have the same agreement with your child. Let your child know that they can always talk to you and tell you about anything inappropriate that occurs during technology usage.
Our agreement addresses how to manage personal data in a safe manner and how to protect the rights and privileges of others. For example, never sharing information such as home address or telephone number without permission and never taking or posting information about another individual without consent. Please remind your child that digital content is everlasting, even when deleted or within privacy settings.
Lastly, we reminded students that the school has the right to monitor student use of technology. We encourage you to have the same agreement with your child. Please monitor your child's use of technology; your child should have no expectation of privacy for any technology usage. As parents, reserve the right to access any technology usage or equipment.
At the end of our meeting, Fr. Andy reminded students of God's love for them and how we are called to treat every person with respect and dignity, including ourselves.
Please review the ADW Technology and Internet Usage Agreement with your child. We encourage you to re-read this document as a family and to either adopt the same principles as a family or formulate your own family media/technology plan.
The American Association of Pediatrics has a template here for creating a family media/technology plan.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support as we work in partnership to help our students become their best selves and educated digital citizens.
With love,
Sheila
