What Makes a Miracle a Miracle?

How does one even define miracle? Do you believe in miracles? These are not easy questions, because each of us will come to them with varying ideas and opinions.  Each of us have had different life experiences that shape how we answer these questions. Beginning August 6th, I invite you to join me at Parkway Hills UMC as we Rethink Miracles. Over the next 6 weeks, we will look at stories found in the Gospel of Matthew and listen for the miracle found within them. Whether it is Jesus feeding 5,000 with only a few loaves and a couple fish or walking on water as Peter sinks, whether it is a persistent Canaanite woman who refuses to be ignored or a person making a bold statement of faith, whether it is a group of individuals answering a call or a body striving to be community, we will explore the miracle present as God is present among God’s people. Maybe we will even open ourselves up to see the miracles happening among us everyday. I look forward to journeying through these stories with you as we all Rethink Miracles!                  Peace in Christ, Dawn
Speaking of Miracles...Meet our Newest Member:
We are thrilled to introduce you to little Ellen Kate, daughter of Brad and Lindsey Norris. Ellen was born yesterday, and the whole family is smitten, including big sister Emma, and big brother Will. Be sure to send them a note of congratulations, an offer of help, or perhaps supply them with a meal as they adjust to life as a family of five.
We are kicking off a new year of Sunday School on August 6th!
Children will enjoy doughnuts in their new classrooms at 9:45 am this Sunday, August 6th. The celebration will continue for all children through 5th grade and their parents when we gather back at the church that evening for water slides, pizza and sno cones at 5:00 pm!
Our Youth Group, all rising 6th through 12th graders, will celebrate on Sunday with a "Splish-Splash-Back-to-School-Bash" at the Bellevue Pool at Lake Caroline, (across from the Mermaid Cafe) from 5:30 - 7:30 pm.
This Sunday kicks off our Shoe, Clothing & Coat Drive. While ALL contributions are gratefully accepted, Grace Place has shared that currently their most pressing needs are for men's clothing, expecially jeans in sizes 32 through 38, and comfortable walking shoes, size 10½ and larger. Not only will we be collecting these new (or gently used) items, but over the next 6 weeks, we will be introducing you to specific individuals served by Grace Place. Our prayer is that seeing their faces and hearing their stories will help strengthen our relationship with the homeless and marginally housed in Jackson.

Beyond
Bunk Beds

You have heard about the impact our bunk beds make in the lives of families right here in Madison County. But, did you know this ministry reaches outward in our community in other ways? Scraps left over from our builds are 'upcycled' into birdhouses, which are then decorated and sold at the Mustard Seed Gift Shop. (The Mustard Seed is a Christian community for adults with developmental disabilites.) Other scraps have gone on to be decorated by the Sunnybrook Kids!  You may buy them at the second annual Champions for Children Dinner benefiting Sunnybrook Children's Home.  It will be held at 7:00 pm on August 12th. CLICK HERE to secure your tickets for this event.
FAMJAM
On Saturday, August 12th, Christ UMC in Jackson is hosting an event for children from kindergarten through 6th grade.
CLICK HERE to learn more about it. Dawn and her family will be there - make plans to join them!
Don't forget to invite all the teachers and students in your life to join us for worship this Sunday! We'll have a service of prayer and communion especially for them as they prepare to return to school.
