Dear SDSC Collaborators, Partners and All Friends:
Last month’s CENIC “The Right Connection” conference was one of several recent moments where SDSC expertise and work from across the center came together in ways that span research, education and infrastructure, with applications ranging from wildfire response and agriculture to secure computing and AI.
SDSC played a leading role in the program, including two keynote presentations. One focused on our National Research Platform collaboration with CENIC’s Artificial Intelligence Resource (CENIC AIR), which is driving social mobility by enabling experiential AI learning at community colleges and universities across California. Another focused on the importance of the research and education networking community becoming an active AI innovation infrastructure, drawing on examples from SDSC’s National Data Platform and AI-enabled workflows and digital twins for wildfire response.

At UC San Diego, high-performance computing is being woven directly into undergraduate engineering education by giving students early, hands-on experience with the same tools that drive modern research and development.

Researchers used Expanse to simulate the atomic-level destruction of PFAS "forever chemicals" on electrically charged surfaces. This breakthrough provides a roadmap for using electrochemical methods to effectively remove them from drinking water supplies.

|
Researchers at UC San Diego used the Expanse supercomputer to develop an AI model that accurately maps the urethra, potentially helping clinicians minimize radiation side effects and improve precision in prostate cancer treatment.

The 7NRP Workshop will take place May 5-7 and will cover both the current state of NRP as well as its future direction. A major focus will be on AI tech in agriculture and the relationships between NRP and CENIC AIR, AI education, science and more.
|
|
Covering introductory-to-intermediate topics in HPC, data science and AI, this weeklong workshop accelerates the learning process through interactive discussions and hands-on tutorials on Expanse. Application deadline is Friday, April 24.

A standout partnership between the SDSC Research Data Services division (RDS) and the Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) demonstrates how student innovation drives real impact. RDS interns developed TRAC, a custom web application that streamlines participant tracking and consent management for Alzheimer’s research. This innovative partnership provides students with high-level technical experience while optimizing workflows for the ADRC.

The Convergence Research (CORE) Institute is now seeking applications for its 2026-2027 Leadership Council to help guide a new cohort focused on AI and Indigenous language revitalization. This interdisciplinary initiative aims to develop responsible, community-centered technology that prioritizes data sovereignty and the preservation of endangered languages.

The Practice and Experience in Advanced Research Computing (PEARC) Conference seeks nominations for individuals to serve as the PEARC 2028 Conference General Co-Chairs or as PEARC Steering Committee Members-at-Large. There are currently several Steering Committee positions available for the next term.

Taught by UCSD undergraduates over four weeks via Zoom, students in grades eight and nine can dive deeper into a subject they're passionate about — whether academic or extracurricular. Our goal is to spark curiosity and inspire future pursuits in high school, college, and beyond. Spring 2026 Topics: Mechanical Engineering, Data Science, Nanoengineering.
