BIPOC communities convening this week at PSU

On Friday, Portland State will host Time to Act: The Future and Thriving of BIPOC Communities at the University Place Hotel. This event is the culmination of affinity summits and convenings held this summer and fall with community groups of individuals identifying as Latiné, Black, Pacific Islander and Asian American (PIAA), Native American and Middle Eastern/North African/South Asian (MENASA). This week’s event is a day of co-creation and mobilizing for action, to create an agenda for shared prosperity. Food, childcare and gift cards will be provided to participants. Register here.

Staff and students can share pronouns with PSU

PSU respects, supports and celebrates the unique and individual identities of our community. In celebration of Trans Awareness Month, students, staff and faculty now have the opportunity to share the pronouns they use. Pronouns will be available on class rosters, in Canvas and on the PSU Faculty & Staff Directory. Honoring pronouns is a vital part of welcoming students and creating a welcoming space for learning. To learn more about pronouns, how they will be shared and usage expectations, please visit the Pronouns webpage.

Submit course proposals for Race & Ethnic Studies Requirement

The Race & Ethnic Studies Requirement (RESR) Committee is now accepting submissions for course proposals. Please complete the Google form no later than Dec. 2, 2022.

Courses fulfilling the RESR must have a central focus on race, ethnicity, and systemic oppression.
Courses must focus on the U.S. experience or must center the experiences of groups under European and U.S. colonialism and imperialism beyond the U.S.
Course proposals must include a complete syllabus, indicate whether the course meets the domestic or international component of the RESR, and explain why and how the course satisfies the curriculum and pedagogy of the RESR.

Cheer on PSU’s women’s soccer team

It's tournament week for the Portland State women's soccer team. The Vikings qualified for the Big Sky tournament after finishing third during the regular season. They'll face sixth-seeded Montana in the quarterfinals of the Big Sky tournament in Colorado on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 10 a.m. PT. Win that match, and the Vikings will advance to the semifinals Friday, Nov. 4 at the same time. The championship match is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 6, at 11 a.m. PT. All tournament matches will be streamed on ESPN+.

Let students know about Mind Spa services

Midterms are here — are you seeing some stressed out students? Direct them to the Mind Spa at the Center for Student Health and Counseling (SHAC). The Mind Spa features various Biofeedback games, light therapy, a massage chair and a meditation corner so students can rest, relax and recharge.
